Before I start posting, I thought it'd be proper to say hello to Jarred Land and dvxuser BB members. So....hello! You guys have a great online community here and by only skimming through the forums, I have seen a great wealth of information and discussion going on here. Great job!

About me...I'm a web, print, video, interactive media producer based in Honolulu. I got started in the biz in 1997 with my background being primarily in audio and music composition. I expanded into video and all the other good stuff in 2000. I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you.

BTW I found this site looking for reviews on the Varizoom DV Sportster and found this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=39637

Aloha! What island do you live on? I've only ever been to Maui, but it's absolutely gorgeous.

Hey Mahalo,
I used to live in Kailua, when I was working for Square.
Sure miss that ocean breeze and the fine swimming....

"Shaka bro".......... was stationed at Schofield Bks. back in late '80's.... Spent a year and a half on Oahu...... Got a chance to check out neihbor islands as well. The time time spent was great, beautiful places........... but, I'm an East coast guy at heart.
I probably got a little island fever... at the same time..... I'd go back to vacation!

Welcome Hako......

Okay, I should edit my original post now to include "everyone here is super friendly too!" Thanks for the warm welcome guys. If any of you are ever in town, I'll buy you a round or two.

TC: I hail from the east side of Oahu (the capitol island), a boony town called Kahaluu. After I got married a couple years back my wife and I moved to Honolulu, where I am now. Yes Maui is a beauiful island, well all of the Hawaiian islands are beautiful. Since the neighbor isles haven't been developed as much as Oahu, you don't have to drive as far to see the other islands' untouched beauty. I'd think of Maui as a maybe second to Oahu in terms of being developed. And in some ways even more than Oahu. Maui has IHOP and Krispy Kreme, Oahu does not. Yep its a huge step forward in terms of modern development for us island folk (kidding).

Taylor Moore: Cool deal, you worked for Square? For the Final Fantasy project I presume? We might know the same people. After Square finished off the project, they were selling a bunch of equipment. My company actually bought a bunch of Square stuff hehe.

brownhood: Wahiawa huh? (That's the north country side of the island for you guys who aren't familiar with Oahu geography; close to where all the famous big surf beaches are like Waimea, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, and Pipeline). I drive over to Schofield Barracks bout' once a month. I do contract work for the Army. Island/Rock fever...yep I get that too once in a while. Luckily I get to travel several times throughout the year so it's not so bad. Maybe I'll bump into some of you at the next NAB.

And yes, I like using smilies! :cheesy:

eh bra owsit, aloha! i left maui 2003, it's funny how people get island fever and they neva leave their own couple of blocks of neighborhood. i live in santa monica and hardly go anywhere except to fly outta town. me, neva get da feva brudda ...only fer da island.

Howzit Kimko!

I think peeps who've lived on the continental US and then move to Hawaii are more prone to getting island fever. When compared to say LA or NY, there's not much to do in the way of Amusement theme parks, night clubs, entertainment and the such. You can drive around the entire island of Oahu in about 2.5 hours without stops. Driving around the Big Island of Hawaii takes about a day or so. So yeah that's where the rock fever comes from.

My form of island fever comes in the form of the type of clients I have to deal with. The majority of them are very conservative and its hard to convince them to use the types of looks and treatments that's being done on a national level.

There is good to the conservativeness (is that a word? lol) which brings me back to the beauty of the islands. Its that, I'm going to use the word again, conservativeness and laid back mentality that makes the people so friendly and nice. That's the true beauty of Hawaii.

Going back to the negative and clientele, nobody wants to be the first to try something. Therefore, everything tends to look the same. Its such a breath of fresh air when I get to do collaborative work with friends on Mainland. There's just so much more room for creativity.

I'm not trying to turn this into a continental US vs Hawaii debate (my disclaimer hehe), but one thing Hawaii has over the mainland hands down is seafood. The variety and freshness can't be beat. Being on an island in the middle of the ocean has a lot to do with that methinks. :cheesy:

Nice go at the pidgin speak Kimko, baht dees eez ho you do um'. No worry cuz, I no where I from, I neva going foget.

Translation: "But this is how you do it. Don't worry bro, I know where I come from and I never will forget that." :)

Aloha!

No Need For Trans Bra Unerstood. Man Fresh Ahi . My Play Time Was The Ocean Spearfishing, scuba Diving, Upcountry On Horseback, jumpin Off Waterfalls, feasting Bar-b-q, Man That's Fun! But Couldn't Make The Coin Worth @#$%, So Here I Am On The Road Again, There I Go Up On The Stage........... But I'm Enjoying Ride

That translation was meant for non pidgin speakers Kimko. Small kine rude we stay talking different language den nobadeh anastan. Dis one Nort Merican' haole inglish speaking bbs no? Sometimes steh hod nuf trying fo anastan inglan (UK) inglish nowadamean? Jus trying fo use propa edeket l'dat. Man it's hard enough trying to translate into pidgin LOL.

I know what you mean about making the coin worth @#$%. My business partners and I often talk about being in the wrong town. But hey, we do what we can to make things happen y'know? I'm extremely lucky that my wife has stable income. My friends and family keep trying to convince me to move to the mainland, but my wife's pretty much settled here. As long as I get to do what I love, I'm happy. Now getting paid - that's a different story.

I can imagine it being even tougher on Maui. Maui's a town where all the rich celebrity types have their mult-million dollar vacation homes. It's become more popular than Oahu. I think there's one or two big recording studios there and that's bout it. Broadcast Video/Film/Post production is just not happening over there.

A Hui Hou...

Yeah those funny Square guys...I stayed as long as I could but the script's were killing me...I'm sure you got a sweet deal on the gear. They needed the cash...

Sweet deal indeed. Twas kinda nice buying used gear and knowing where it came from vs. buying from ebay. I had my eye on the huge Barco projector that they used to review their dailies with. Unfortunately I didnt' have budget for a used $20K projector. That and I didn't have the space in my shop hehe. Oh the joys of gearlusting!

Welcome man. Hawaii is awsome. I have only been there a couple of times, and only to Oahu and Maui. I stayed at Bellows last winter, and it was awsome. My sister goes to school at UH, and finally moved out of the dorms and into an apartment, so now I have a cheap room to stay in if I can save up the funds to get over there again! I think you should post some sunny pictures for all the people like me in the soggy Northwest that just endured what seemed to be an endless supply of rain and dark skies.

I was there this past May and I also got married there 8 yrs ago.... I just found out that an old girl friend lives there and I had a thought of visiting without my wi... Well, let me stop there...

Welcome!

HAKU nicely written pidgin man that's hard to do! it's hard enough talkin but writing is so hard
