Allow me to work for you (for free)

Drew Ott

Wish I were banned.
This summer, after graduating high school, I’m going to be doing a solo extended travel around the U.S. living in my car. While on the trip, I want to work on as many shoots as possible (narrative, doc, commercial), and I’ll gladly do it for free. The goal is to gain experience and meet as many of you as possible. I’m willing to stay in one location for a month or more working on a feature, or just help out on set for a day.

The only experience I have on 35mm sets is as an electrician. I worked as an electrician intern on Ex-Terminators (shot in Austin, TX) for about 20 days, and that’s the only time I’ve worked on what I consider a “big set.” I learn quickly and am glad to work as any position; I just might be asking lots of questions in the beginning.

Aside from that, I’ve worked as various crew positions on about a dozen short films and documentaries. I’ve been camera operator, boom operator, gaffer, grip, 2nd AC, loader (I’ve only loaded with the Arri SR2), steadicam op, and PA. I have lots more to learn in every department, so I’m happy with any position I can get.

Anyway, if you think there’s a chance that I could be useful on anything you are working on, please let me know. I’ll probably bump this thread once the trip begins, so if you don’t have anything planned now, maybe you will then.

One more thing: I have most of my camera gear essentials with me, so if you want to shoot a short but don't have the equipment, I could potentially help you out.

Huh. Interesting idea. Best of luck to you. Let me know if you're out in the California area. Might be able to set you up on something.

dood, you gotta roll tape on your adventures and when you come through St louis, holla atta brutha!
I think what you are doing is freakin cool.

Hey Drew,

Really cool man, I wish I were just out of highschool and able to do that!

I have a production your welcome to join for a day or more or until you get tired of us, your choice but it has lots of variables. It's a fast action run n' gun action adventure show on storm / tornado chasing and mother nature dictates our schedule. In July tornadoes migrate further north so Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa will probably be our chase territory.

I wish I could give you exact dates, if you are anywhere around here when passing through you are welcome to join us for a fun adventure! I can probably give you a 24 hour notice maybe 48 hours on a really strong slow moving weather pattern setup. We have driven to Texas and back to KC in one long 18 hour day, I don't recomend it :) My crew is based in KC for this season.

This is they type of stuff you'd be shooting with your A1. (that's me on the left)

FYI Grinner is a 3 1/2 hour drive from me in KC, we can put you up for a few nights in KC if this is something you'd want to work on.

Drew, If you are in the Cape Cod, MA area anytime, don't know if you will be, I can try and hook you up on some shoots

Zac

That is Epic Chip.... I've be a very large fan of you "tornado documentaries" for a while, and considered beaming out from MA to try my luck (terrible I idea to do by myself)

A1 users unite! Let me know when you're in the NY/CT area.

Can't help you with anything film related, but if you want to work on some low budget local TV spots.....:D

I can't be sure about actual work, but when you reach Los Angeles you ought to come over for lunch at the lot...

Uh, what's your hygiene plan?

Not totally sure. I don't think it'll be much of a problem to brush my teeth and shower regularly. There are places where one can shower for free.

Sounds good. My grandpa lives in St. Louis so I was planning on staying there for a couple of days. Thanks.

That sounds really fun. I remember crying in the movie theater when I saw Twister (I was 5 in 1996), but I think I could handle it now. :)

Great. My original plan was just to go west, but there seems to be more than I imagined in the East, so I probably will end up in Massachusetts eventually.

If your trip takes you through I-70 in Columbus, Ohio, let me know.

Not sure if it will, but I'll be sure to let you know if it does. Thanks!

You're always welcome in upstate NY!

Awesome, thanks!

Haha, nice. I'll be looking to shoot low budget local TV spots and things like that when I'm back in Austin after the trip, so this would actually be really helpful.

That would be great! I'm not even certain that I know what "the lot" is... :) I'm planning to stay in Los Angeles for a while because I eventually plan to move there, so I will definitely contact you at some point.

Sorry, right now 'the lot' means 20th Century Fox. At least, until next February or so (unless someone offers me something more interesting elsewhere...)

Are you going to be in the NYC area? Let me know. I have a few projects coming up that you could probably join me on.

If you do decide to come to the east coast and make it down to Richmond, VA give me a shout. We got some fun stuff down here.

Thanks, will do.

If you end up in... ah, shi*... that'll never happen.:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Eh, there's a chance. :) I'm going to go to Yellowstone, and will probably make a long drive east after that to the other side of the country, so... maybe.

Exciting. Thanks for the offer.

The eastern US is going to be the second half of the trip, so I may be in the area if you're working on the projects some time in late August or September.
