Every time I go to capture footage to my scratch disk(250gb firewire external) FCP sits saying allocating disk space for a good 3-5 minutes before allowing me to actually start capturing...What I am doing wrong?
I'd repair your permissions and maybe even think about trashing your prefs. Oh -- how many things are hooked up to your firewire ports? Chaining them is fine, but don't try to hub them. That could be a problem.
Yeah -- ok, permissions is easy... Open the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Open up Disk Utility and choose First Aid (should already be there). Click on the disk that is your boot drive and then Repair permissions. Run it twice. In fact, run it EVERY time you load something new on your computer.
How often do you have to trash the preferences? I’m thinking about switching to FCP and I’ve heard this problem mentioned long and often, can’t Apple solve this problem?

How well do you like FCP?
Thanks ;D

With 12 student editors running FCP for a year I had to trash prefs on OS-X never. In fact, I am not even sure how it is done in FCP - OSX so I have been waiting for someone to explain it enough so that I could try it out. At justice we had eight full editors running with FCP for a year with only one crash -- a mother board fault related to a lightning strike.
Generally, very few firewire drives can handle being part of any video editing chain except as a portable storage system, except for the fastest (2 drive) 800 models that is. If you want more space in a G5 there are kits to add up to another terabyte internally to a G5 case, the FW drive should be used more like a big, fast floppy drive.
