Does anyone have any experience with these "all-in-one" type apple boxes that are available on Amazon and Ebay? Something like this:

I need do get some apple boxes, and I like the idea of easily transporting them, so storing them all in one full-size seems appealing to me. But I'm concerned that either the build quality might be lacking, or that the whole thing might be too heavy to be practical. I've never seen them on set, so that's why I'm concerned.

Never used the nesting ones (a la your link) but I made some of my own that are sturdy, took less than a weekend and just two sheets of 4'x8' plywood (1/2" and 3/4" I think) and a box of screws to make. Easy peasy. I've got one full box I'm working on putting a hinged lid on to store things in - they wouldn't nest, but the full box has lots of wasted space inside AFAIC so I thought it might be useful. If you're handy I think DIY is the way to go on something as simple as Apple Boxes. Just my two cents though.

I carry nesting apple boxes on my van as they take up less space. My full apple box sets stay in studio unless I know I will need them.

David, so you'd say the nesting ones are just as good?

Depends on your needs. I have limited space on my van so they fit that need.

As far as build quality goes, mine are Birch Ply and very sturdy.

Weight issue you brought up.... It's a wash. 10 pounds of wood still weighs 10 pounds no matter how you cut it, if you get my drift.

Again, I have a couple of sets of complete apple boxes as well. They are great if you have the space.

I have a client that has those. My only complaint is I always seem to pick the biggest box (that all others fit in) the wrong way (by the top handle/removable piece) and it falls apart on me. Like every time. And then if you pick it up the right way, it ALSO falls apart because now all the weight is on the piece that's supposed to come off (i.e. now the removeable piece is on the bottom). The only safe way to do it is carry it like a small dog or baby which is not how one is used to carrying apple boxes.

I bought the set you linked above. They're great for my uses and pack small, but the little removable door is the weak point. One of the pins that holds it in has already broken through the edge of the box. Not a huge deal but a little disappointing. It still holds together when transporting thanks to the two small magnets on the opposite side of the pins. They're decent but not perfect, but when vehicle space is critical, they're great. Always having a full set is nice. You can always use one more apple box on set.

We 2 sets of Advantage Gripware "set in one". Very well built - heavy duty magnets in the door. - never had an issue with the construction. When they were new they ended up styling food ingredients
as they looked amazing. Every small grip department/van/package etc- should have couple as they are very handy to have.

you can sometimes get away with mini apple boxes, which are half the size of regular. (a full mini is 8x12x10, a full regular is 8x12x20) So you can have twice as many boxes in the same space. We use both types.
