Aliasing in Magic Bullet Looks

Hi all:

Working on a video using FCP 5.1.4 and Magic Bullet Looks. Original video was shot on DVX-100A, well exposed and lit. The kid is wearing a bright red shirt and a red cap. Yes, I know that bright red doesn't work that well in NTSC, but as you can see from the unprocessed shot, the red looks acceptable.

If I add anything from Magic Bullet Looks, I instantly get pretty bad aliasing as you can see

I have tried numerous settings and adjustments and I think I am just going to have to live with it. Fortunately this is a fun doc that does not have a client, it's just for some friends so no big deal but if this was for a paying client, I would be tearing my hair out. All of the other shots in the sequence with the same kid look okay, it's just this shot in particular.

Any advice, ideas why it is aliasing so bad only on this shot? As you can see, it only affects the bright red, not the rest of the kid or anything else in the shot. I would like to use Looks for some of my client footage that I shoot for tv and also a theatrical doc that I am in the middle of shooting but this experience leaves me gun shy to use MBL.

All my best,

Dan

It looks like you are shooting interlaced (I can see jaggies on the childs arms and face)
Maybe try deinterlacing first?

I have no idea if MB looks works better on progressive footage but deinterlacing might smooth the edges out a wee bit

Worth a try?

Hi Master:

It was shot 24p but as you know, in NTSC DV, it does end up back in interlaced so perhaps the de-interlace filter might do the trick. I will give it a try and will let you know how it looks.

Good suggestion.

I don't have MB Looks, I have MBE 2.0, but I've noticed the same thing when applying some of the more radical presets. If you push the DV footage too far, solid reds, blues, and greens start to artifact like that.

I've got FCS2 and have started to do alot of my cc in prores 422, which seems to help.

when I used FCS1 i would just drop the reds a bit and use the color smoother filter, which helped.

Hi Anchor:

I got a response from the genius, Graeme Nattress on another board and he concurs with your idea, it is simply the limitations of 4:1:1 on DV, he suggested applying a color smoother too.

I rarely shoot DV anymore but this friend who shot this used my DVX-100. It's been a long time since I have had to deal with DV. Looks good but definitely has it's limitations I guess. Too late for ProRes, the entire project is pretty much done and is on a DV timeline.

Thanks,

Dan
