Don't watch it if you want to be entertained. Watch it if you want to feel sorry for a bunch of talented people for having huge ambitions which fail entirely. Not a fun movie. Not even a very interesting one.
I thought it was ok. But over heavy on the gay stuff. And I dont have a problem with that. But if you want to make a movie about Alexander the Great and his bisexual lifestyle make that movie and bill it as a movie about his lifestyle. This was billed as a giant epic battle movie, which i paide my 10 bucks for and got 2 battles in 3 hours. I had to go home and watch Braveheart to cheer myself up.
It's a move about a man that conquered 3/4's of the world and you barely see it. You don't see how he could be such an amazing tactitian or really what drives him.
That's one problem and a major one, the other problems are weird cinematography, a bad script, bad acting, an unfocused approach, laughably bad use of motifs (snakes, anyone?), bad casting, a failed (though ambitious) attempt and psychological and political analysis, and umm...a lot of other things.
It's boring, and it actually made me sad to see it, because I think the cast is extremely talented and the director is too, and clearly everyone involved worked hard and the movie cost a lot of money to make. Despite all this, it fails, and it's just painful to see such a great deal of effort and love and creativity fall apart in front of you. It's not bad enough to be campy, either. It's just dull and unfortunate and over-ambitious.
As for the gay scenes, I think they did stress that an unusual amount, but the most they showed was Alexander kissing some random guy from a distance. The movie blatantly states that he and Hephestion were having sex, but all they really do is hug a lot and talk about how pure their love is or something. And the sex scenes with Rosario Dawson (despite being WEIRD and oddly shot) showed quite a bit, although Alexander seemed not to get along too well with Roxanne. There's certainly a double standard there (no surprise) but it's a weird one and makes the movie even more muddled and confused than it already is. I think it was brave of Stone to show (well, mostly imply) as much as he did, though I think he mishandled the whole thing a bit. Still, if anyone feels uncomfortable watching two men hug (which is honestly about as far as the movie goes), they need to chill out.
I agree that it was brave to even address the whole bisexual issue, because it wasnt a big deal in those days. But by focusing so much of the movie on it, lots of longing looks and heavy glances, it made it more of a big deal than it probably was to them. But again I stress, and I may be wrong, but the reason they called him "Alexander the Great" was because of his military acuman and his amazing achievements, not his prowess in the bedroom with men or women.
yeah man...I was gonna take my lil bro and sis to see it. And when someone told me about all the content, I slapped my head like "doh!"
I knew all about the homosexual practices in the Spartan army, but it never occurred to me that the film would center so heavily around it...
That's kinda crude if you ask me...like if a movie about ancient Israel focused unnecessarily on circumcision. What's the puuuuuuuuurpose?? I understand that with our political climate, it's 'interesting' that Alexander was bi, but to overstate it like that is kinda sophomoric.
And I'll stop there before I say something insensitive.
