Alexa walkthrough

Would 30 seconds of ARRIRAW footage be too much to ask when you get it? I've been trying to find some to test my workflow since the D21 came out...

The Alexa is a really cool camera. I got to play around with one at Arri's release party at the DGA. They of course were just going to the cards, as 444prores, not a drive with ArriRaw... Have they announced a recorder for use with the Alexa? Or are we using SR decks like Genesis and Sony?

Do you have a workflow for ArriRaw Perrone?

Sure, I can upload footage to my yousendit account up to 2GB. I dont know how many seconds that will translate to but that should be no problem.

Have you checked out the Glue Tools toolkit for Final Cut Studio?

Not yet, nothing like the Panavision SSR-1. Our intent is to start off with the cards and maybe use systems like codex until better technology comes along. At this pace I dont think it will be too long.

Earlier this year, I installed the ARRIRAW program for PC platforms. I haven't been able to take any real footage through it.

When I installed Avid in June, I installed the ARRIRAW plug-in also. So I am trying to take some footage through both of those to see which I like better. I did the same with RED but that was before I had Avid. I can do a 4K RED timeline in Sony Vegas, or bring in RED via AMA into Avid. But I believe I am going to have to use Metafuze for the ARRIRAW.

Have you checked compatibility? When I said SR, I meant the SSR-1/SRW-1. The SSR-1 is used by panavision, but it's older brother is the Sony SRW-1... which I think is compatible. Either way, I expect arri to have a unit of very comparable performance/operation... It needs an on-board recording unit for ArriRaw. I can't see the pro's always having to be tethered. This isn't the grass valley viper +10 years ago.

I'm super jealous of your Alexa! If I was just entering the camera market, the Alexa would be my choice hands down, no second thoughts. It is a beautiful camera with great functional engineering. Too bad you're not in LA, cause I'd stop over and play.

The Arri D-21 was a great camera, and I can't wait to shoot something on the Alexa. For old times sake, here is an old Arri-D21 demo reel I kinda liked. A few shots are just horrible (like the blasting HMI on the historical couple about to be married. I'd warm it up with 1/4 CTO, diffuse it and maybe even use a softFX filter... makeup is so obvious!), but the rest are pretty cool and show the range the camera has.

Alexa is truly a beautiful camera. Has a look that is different from the Red, and in this day and age, with everything being RedOne... those subtle differences give it a distinction of it's own. That's one of the reasons I like Cooke lenses, geared heads, and other equipment. It gives subtle nuances of being something 'else'. Apart from the others. Did I mention I was jealous much?

We work frequently with the SWR-1 and the SSR-1where the biggest difference is the SSR being solid state. I would love to see a ARRI version of those systems. The codex system will work with anything that has Dual link HD-SDI:

We use steadicam for almost every production we do so we need a lightweight version of the on board recording options like you mentioned (Arri, are you listening?). My steadicam op (and myself as an op) commonly refer to flying the Panavision Genesis in single mode as the "Genocide" because of the weight. Most of the time we opt out for fiber connection for the least amount of hassle for the operator.

Even though I am excited about getting the Alexa (including the full set of Arri lenses, 2 more Varicams, Steadicam Ultra-2...etc) it might be short lived as I am finalizing a deal to sell my company (along with all the gear) and move back to LA. So its a happy/sad time . I hope to get as much as hands on time before I take off, even though I will probably build from the ground up in LA again with the same gear. But who knows, maybe there be another "great next thing" by then???

wow ....how much is this Alexa thing and how does it compare to Red One mysterium X?

The body runs around 70K. I prefer not to get into comparison as those things tend to turn into camera wars.

The bottom line for me is to get the camera that will generate the most income. Whether thats an Flip, 5D, Arri, RED, F-35.... doesn't matter.

Here is thread from reduser on the comparison:

hmm looks like alexa and epic are about even. alexa has greater DR, epic greater resolution.

but can someone tell me what the price of epic will be roughly? Is epic just a minor upgrade over Red One and thus will be similsr 20-40k price range? Or is it up there with alexa at 70-100k etc?
