ALERT: Quick Feedback on Kinescope Project

Hey!--

I am just getting my wedding/event videography business underway and I would like some reactions to a project I just did.  Its  "kinescope" Ken-Burnsesque slide show to be projected at the reception this coming Saturday.  It's not finished (some titling will go on the end and the audio will fade out) but it is close enough to be critiqued.

BTW, the entire project will be 2.35:1 aspect on DVD, just like the QT mp4 file I am posting for your review.  Love Cinemascope aspect!  I will be running a 3-camera (all DVX100s) shoot on Saturday, manning all of the cameras myself (one manually, two with Bescor MP101 remote pan/tilts with a home-made zoom remote constructed from instructions posted on this site).

Please give me feedback on the following:

• character generation
• timing/pacing
• kinescopic movement in stills
• audio engineering
• any other boneheaded mistake I might have made
• the areas I should look to improve upon before my next gig.

Don't bother commenting on the following (predetermined by the bride):

• quality of the photos
• # of photos
• music selections
• length of project

I can change any glaring errors before Saturday if I catch them today.  Thank you all for your assistance.

Re: ALERT: Quick Feedback on Kinescope Project

I liked it...not sure what happened at the end, there's a lot of black video... The aspect ratio is nice (happens to be my favorite). For this genre, I liked the choice of music also. I found the titling to be a little cheesy but it's totally in line with a wedding style piece (don't take offense to this, just put it in its proper context). Not really any constructive criticism I can offer given your criteria. I think it will be a hit for sure.

For the future if you do something like this, work on the photos a little more, I would definitely use the levels control in Photoshop to bring up the blacks a little more, it's amazing how fast you can restore a photo using this simple tool.

Good luck with it.

Re: ALERT: Quick Feedback on Kinescope Project

My understanding was that "kinescoping" was the animation process of giving still photos the illusion of movement via zooms, pans, and tilts. Nowdays a NLE can do this with stills far easier than the process with film animation, i.e., moving the picture slightly and snapping off a frame.

If this is an antiquated term, please feels free to provide an alternative. I have heard this kind of movement called the "Ken Burns Effect," but sheesh--documentarians have been doing this sort of thing for decades.

As far as the titling goes, the background is supposed to look like a river of chocolate. The theme of the wedding is chocolate--invitations looked like the "golden ticket" from Willy Wonka, and suits and dresses are deeps brown and light beige, and the reception this will be shown at will feature a free-flowing chocolate fountain for chocolate fruit/creme puff fondue. I probably should have explained that when starting the thread!

I used LiveType for the character generation and FCP HD for everything else, for those who are curious. Also, I was given the pictures one week ago, so while I wholeheartedly agree that each frame could have used a bit of contrast and black level tweaking, there just wasn't enough time to fix 100 individual photos and assemble this by Saturday.

Thanks for your comments, and keep them coming! By tommorow afternoon I am going to have to burn this to DVD, so any last minute critiques are welcome!
