Alcohol for a bar?

Hey guys,

my friends and I are debating what we need for a small bar. I only work with mixed drinks. But haven't ventured out of the vodka realm. I've exhausted most of the drinks I can make with vodka alone.

Right now I am looking to build in a light rum, gin, triple sec, and blue curacao. There are so many drinks I can make with those. Wondering is Tequila is even worth it?

But I don't know what brands are decent there. I am looking for cheaper stuff though. So no grey goose.

And on top of that, anything decent that should be added for mixed drinks? And any drinks people recommend (along with how to make it)?

You can always have your marguritas, but Tequila is a great shooter. I dont keep tequila on hand to mix, but I certainly keep some Patron on hand for a shot. Corzo is also good as well as others.

Patron gets the most attention, but I will take Herradura Anejo over Patron Platinum any day.

Crap. Just read that you are looking at the cheaper stuff. Well... I cannot help you. And Grey Goose is the lowest I go on Vodka.

If you're looking for cheap, go with sauza gold. cheapest tequila you can get around here, and it's not too bad in a shot glass. Personally I normally get jose cuervo though

Yeah, still at the point where expensive alcohol is out of the question. Mostly for small parties, nothing I need to impress people with.

I seem to be one of the only ones to go for tequila normally. I might get some actually. Haha, one day Gage I will be able to go for the top of the shelf stuff. Today...is not that day.

Learn how to make a Harvey Wallbanger.

(I have no idea what it is but it sounds cool and it sounds like it's from the 70's)

filter cheap vodka through a brita pitcher about 3-5 times (depending on the shittiness of the vodka), and it tastes a lot better, takes the bite out of it, nice and smooth.

See, you learn stuff in college :)

Ok,

Here are some things you can do to help yourself:

1. Buy a Boston's. This is the basic bible to drink making.
2. Buy a blender and a martini shaker
3. Visit a good bar, examine what is where and why.

Now that said, you'll want to start with the basics.

Alcohol: Vodka, Gin, Whiskey, Rum, Tequila
Mixers: orange guice, grapefruit, cranberry, sour mix, 7up, ginger ale.
Additions: Vermouth (dry), Triple Sec, a couple of flavors like Apple, Watermelon (Midori), Chocolate (Godive), Peach Schnapps, and Amaretto.

From these basics, along with ice, you can create many common concotions, and an incredible variety of flavors. You'll learn why clear liquor generally mixes well with fruit, and why brown liquors mix better with sours or bitters.

You'll learn the basics of the levels of alcohol:

Well, call, premium, super premium and that the prices can vary greatly Especially in Whiskeys.

Wells (your cheapest brands) and calls go into mixed drinks, while premiums and supers are poured neat, or over ice. Occasionally a discerning person might ask for a premium with sour or something similar.

Spend some time buying the small bottles at your local store. Learn the difference between Bacardi, Myers, and Pyrat in rums. Learn the difference in whiskeys with JB, Makers Mark, Glenmorangie or other single malts. In Vodka, learn the difference between Skyy, Absolute, and Belvedere.

There are so many varieties out there, and so many cool things to learn about.

Have fun, and PM me if you need some specific answers.

Also learn how to make a Mongolian Mother poo pooer... it's got 7 different alcohols in it:

That's essentially a Long Island. SaddleRanch, and other places out here have "Adios MotherFocker" which is the same but with blue curacao.

I had two 32oz Adios MF's before I had my 4 bouncer, 2 sheriff altercation on sunset blvd.

I also rode the bull at some point in there.

I would also add Ketel One to that list.

Two 32 ouncers? Yikes... Was that at The Saddle Ranch?
