I read that Albert Hughes backed out of directing duties due to creative differences or something, article is here:

I cant beleive the 'actors' who were given the script, Robbert Pattison and Justin Timberlake??? Is that a joke?

It seems howver, Akira will be made none the less, but I have to admit I'm pretty sick of Hollywood having to ruin everything. I'm a BIG fan of Akira and hate to see it get such a lame treatment.

Of course, I'm just speculating at this point but I really really dont have high hopes for a live action adaption. I mean, look what happened to Dragon Ball Z.

I wonder if Katsuhiro Otomo will be involved in anyway? I even heard its not even going to be set in Tokyo?

Who do you think would be the right man for the directing job?

I don't think it should be translated to live action. There's no need for it. If anything happened, a re-animated version like Evangelion series, for HD.

This as a fan.

Yeh its just Hollywood latching onto a new source because its remakes are running out of steam. But you're right, it should be left well alone.

If they worked with a great animation company overseas and planned on having well known American voice actors for a huge release here in the states, I think that'd be an interesting way to push authentic anime into the area of domestic consumption.

Similar to what Tarantino stamping his name on old Shaolin features did.

Another Akira thread? Seriously?! For a film everyone is supposedly dreading, it sure seems to have the strongest following here of just about any other potential film...

Why did it even need to be translated from the manga mini-series to an animated film, then? It's the same logic. It's bewildering the pre-judgement this project has garnered given the little info we have. Here's a true to life redundancy: if it's good, it's good; if it sucks, it sucks. The same holds true for its two former versions. As Jawa said in one of the other Akira threads, it's probably not going to happen anyway.

Nah, let them make. Nothing to lose. If it is handled as well as the original Matrix movie (nothing the same about it, I know, but it was partially insprired by it), then great something to look forward to.

If the reviews suck then dont go to see it. So, nothing to lose.
