AJA Ki Pro Mini Horror Story

So I was on a shoot today (maybe I am still on set playing on my computer... maybe not), but we were using an AJA Ki Pro Mini for the first time. SDI out into the box, no other form of recording (which I was against.... the option to roll onto tapes in DVCPRO HD seemed like a no brainer as a backup).....

Anyway, we shoot an interview which fills up one 64gb card and a decent way into the second one. While setting up for interview #2 the footage gets dumped into the RAID and we get some error messages. -36 and some other ones. One was saying the disc was not ejected properly, one was saying the file format does not support file sizes this size etc etc. It also sometimes did not even mount the card on the desktop. VERY STRANGE.

Personally I feel that the multi-format card reader (usb 2.0) was a terrible reader to be sent out with the unit and I wish that I had brought my Lexar FW800 reader with for shits and giggles. Our sound guy had another reader that wound up working with no issues so we got those 2 cards transferred....BUT it is not over yet.

Hours later we are called into the office to see that each subsequent dump of footage from those same cards only contained 1 file each. Why this was not noticed on the dump of "card #3" is beyond me, but it happened. Anyway, I Ask Jeeves, and he points me to a Creative Cow post describing this very issue. (link will be added later if that is allowed???)

Basically somehow the Custom Clip Name setting was turned ON but the Custom Clip Number setting was not. So each clip was called CUSTOM and when you go to record your next clip, replaces the previous take because they have the same name. Why the default for Custom Clip Name is not to have Custom Clip Number also ON is crazy. If that is on, you can name your clip "Interview_MichaelBolton" and each time you stop and hit record again it will advance your clips to "Interview_MichaelBolton1...2...3"

Sure enough, we went into Media Menu 19.3 (I think it was .3) and it was Turned ON. And in 19.4 Clip Number was OFF.

I don't know if anyone else has had this issue, but now that I know what happened, I would like to know HOW it happened. Is there a way that in the process of the card freaking out with the shitty card reader it somehow lost its info on clip names and then overrode the setting in the Ki Pro Mini when it was inserted? Cards 1 and 2 are recording fine, Card 1 has problems in the computer and when it goes back into the Ki Pro Mini as "Roll 3".... all the clips (or in this case just the 1) is called CUSTOM.

Nobody went into the menu to change anything, we know this for sure. Just trying to hunt down the glitch that changed it all so AJA can look into it, and so that no one else suffers this tragedy as well.

Sorry for the rant, but when you send 4 interviewees home and then realize you only have their last take recorded.... you sort of freak out. It isn't even my shoot, and I will most likely get another shoot day out of the mistake, but I like the guys who's shoot this was, and hate that it happened to them so I'd like to get to the bottom of it for them.

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated. And any forwarding to "the powers that be" would be even more greatly appreciated.

Time to wrap out the set.

I'm sorry if you had any confusion regarding the operation of the Ki Pro Mini. You did say that "...we were using an AJA Ki Pro Mini for the first time..." so perhaps you were not familiar with all of the possible parameters of the device. Enabling the Custom Clip parameter is something you must do as the default is for this to not be enabled and instead to use the standard clip naming conventions which result in clips with names like "Clip1TK1" or "SC1ATK1".

However, just to clarify this statement regarding custom clip naming, "Why the default for Custom Clip Name is not to have the Custom Clip Number also ON is crazy." The default is indeed to have Custom Clip Take "ON" for the parameter; perhaps the unit you received was a rental unit, and because you were new to the unit, so you simply did not notice that the default setting had been changed. Detailed information regarding the Custom Clip Name and Custom Clip Take parameters can be found on page 33 of the Ki Pro Mini operation manual. There is a boldface "Caution!" note with a red "X" icon next to this text in the manual:
----
If a custom name is not changed and the "Custom Clip Take" parameter is not enabled, an existing clip can be overwritten on the disk. Example: the first recording made is called "Flying" and the "Custom Clip Take" parameter is not enabled and the user does not enter a new value for the custom clip name and leaves "Flying" entered, the first recording will be overwritten by the second recording. AJA does not typically recommend disabling the use of the custom clip take, but in some situations, overwriting an existing file may be desirable.
----
Again, sorry if you were not completely familiar with the operation of the various parameters of the device since it was new to you, but the manual does try to make it clear with the caution statement regarding the perils should you disable the Custom Clip Take parameter.

If you ever have any questions about the operation of an AJA product, you should always feel free to phone or email AJA Technical Support.

Thanks for the reply. The defaults for each setting is not something I should have commented on... but the reason for my posting this story was because no one went into the menu to change any settings between cards 2-3. Card 3 is where our issue started with the name of the clips. I really wanted to present the situation that happened to us in a public forum, hoping someone knows something about it.

The fact that the card reader started to act up and eject the card on its own, not transfer the files and whatever other funky behaviors it had leads me to believe that it was the cause of this eventual Custom Clip Name issue. Has there been any other instances of a corrupted card changing the settings once placed back in the Ki Pro Mini?

If no one went into the menus to change that setting, I have to believe it was the card getting screwed up, and that it was screwed up by this crappy card reader.

My apologies for possibly misinforming anyone out there on the defaults for these specific settings. I think the Ki Pro Mini is an amazing tool and will be working with it again in the future, just want to get to the bottom of this issue to understand what went wrong to prevent it from happening again.

There has never been in testing, or reported to us, a corrupted card inserted into a Ki Pro Mini changing the settings.

There are three ways in which a parameter can be reset: by entering the menu and using the SELECT/ADJUST buttons, by performing a Factory Reset (CONFIG menu item 99.0), or a safe boot.

I would suggest reviewing things with AJA Technical Support via a phone call when you are prepping the device the next time you work with it; they are happy to help and since it performed correctly for you at the outset, the only thing that comes to mind is that the menu parameter was changed at some point inadvertently.
