AJA Cion Redshark Review

I have a couple of short films and a couple of mountaineering trips coming up that I'd love to try a Cion on.

I think that there is an active EF mount available from MTF Services. I didn't look much into it because I have no Canon glass, but I'm fairly certain that they offer one. I'm more interested in the simple Nikon mount that Wooden Camera is making.

Assuming that the Cion actually is using the Cmosis CMV12000 sensor, then I'm pretty confident that it's capable of stellar image quality based on what the folks at Apertus have been able to get from their alpha camera. They're able to get 15 stops of dynamic range from that sensor, but to do that they had to get pretty creative with the logarithmic encoding.

I'm also curious as to how much latitude the raw footage from the Cion has.

It's a bummer that it isn't weather sealed. I want to get a camera that I can take to places where I used to take my Arca-Swiss, and that is a camera that I have no problem with putting out in the rain for a shoot, and everyone I've talked to who's tried out a Cion said it's a very solid workhorse. And it looks like they're getting the color science sorted.... let's hope that they're willing to stay with it for the long haul, because it will take a while to get accepted no matter how great it is (or isn't).

I'm hoping for "is" naturally.
