AJA Announces Ki Pro Mini, MSRP $1995

Some editing programs struggle with the .mov format (Vegas is AWFUL, CS4 isn't so hot either) so this may not be the best solution for people on those platforms.
My statement was regarding Ki Pro mini vs NanoFlash. I just pointed out that they both record in .mov containers. So in the sense they are almost identical units targeting the same user group.

Then perhaps this is a misunderstanding on my part. I believed the Nanoflash unit recorded in the same XDCamEX format as the Sony cameras do, since it records with the same codec. In fact, looking at the Convergent Design web site, it appears that the Nanoflash can record in either .MOV or .MXF formats. The MXF option is what we use on the PCs most typically.

The Ki Pro doesn't offer this option as far as I know.

If theres someone there that told me if this new product of AJA can record p2 files from my HPX 170
Thank you
Pedro.

The Ki Pro Mini can record video from the HPX170 through the HD-SDI port, but the format that it records is Pro Res, not P2 (or DVCPro HD, which is the codec the HPX 170 uses).

In my opinion, Pro Res 422 and Pro Res 422 HQ offer better quality video than DVCPro HD. All are intraframe and have 4-2-2 color, but Pro Res records a full raster 1920x1080 with 10-bit resolution, while DVCPro HD only records 1280x1080 at 8-bits. Pro Res is a variable bit rate codec, so it's hard to say exactly how many GB per minute of footage. But from my experince, the Pro Res files are slightly larger than DVCPro HD files.

Pro Res was originated by Apple, so it is well supported in Final Cut Pro. However, pretty much all the major NLEs (Premiere Pro CS5, Vegas, Avid) also support it now.

Actually it's 0.8GB/minute for ProRes, according to Apple white paper.

I would stick with ki pro mini for a few factors

AJA reputation, is a worthy well warranted one. Defector from BM? well let's just say a lot of BM stuff can get really flaky, so that's a bad starting point in reputation already.

SSD vs CF... mute point, both great, SSD can give you better read and write speeds, but connectors can be flaky too, the sata parts on it weren't built and meant for constant plugging and unplugging like CF cards are, yeh you run into pin issues if you are a maniac with it, but i think you'll start seeing wear and tear on your 600 dollar SSD faster than a CF.

solid audio inputs

too many grades of HDMI with no standarization, and with the changing of cameras from generation to generation, you might find yourself with a useless hunk of silicon if hdmi changes enough, or if it's every just dropped. Which has the likelihood as it's a consumer connection. SDI is a rock solid professional connection, and you can run it hundreds of feet.

even if the connection outputs 8 bit, you still gain a benefit in recording 10 bit even from a 8 bit source. Same laws of transcoding your dsrl footage to 10 bit for a color grade, the color information may be less, but you still gain finer control in the grade over what you do have. Same reasons why you work in 32 bit float in a lot of compositing software so you have wiggle room to work in. For the most part, you have nothing to lose other than hard drive space in recording 10 bit from a 8 bit source, and a lot more to gain.

Thank you very much for your information SUMFUN, and also XMEPHESTOX, so I was thinking to buy more p2 cards, and the panasonic one slot, but I prefer to record with hard drive, so I am thinking to buy one ki pro mini

Have a nice day, and wish you have the best footage as you can.

Pedro.

ki pro mini also has dual cf slots, meaning roll over recording (hopefully) maybe even redundant recording? doubt that, but roll over is nice. you can argue you can just get a bigger SSD and record all day on it, but I like to follow the fundamentals of not putting all your eggs in one basket. Roll over recording also allows for "infinite" recording as long as you have the hd space and constant hot swapping of cards. you will have to cut after awhile on a SSD, even if it's a few hours of recording.

so for projects that need hours and hours and hours of timelapse recording, the built in SD cards in camera, or if they want 10 bit recording, ki pro mini is the way to go. It offers the most flexibility IMHO, well worth the extra bit of money.

So how can I record to my hpx 170 with ki pro mini, if only record in sd cards, can someone tell me the way to record with the ki pro mini footage with the hpx 170

Easy.

HD-SDI out of the 170 - >HD-SDI in on the Ki Pro Mini.

It records to Cf cards, not SD cards.

Not that I ever want to shoot on a canon HDSLR ever again - but if I did - will the KI Pro Mini convert the HDMI output from it to an HD-SDI signal for video village?

Sorry if this has already been covered - I haven't seen an answer yet.

Dan

Hi!

On a Canon 7D you have a live 1080i (letterboxed+pillarboxed) signal out while recording.
The 5D has a 1080 signal when not recording, which drops to 480 when you hit record.
The GH1 currently doesn't have a live feed while recording.

My question is:

Will the Aja mini box act like the hi-5 HDMI to HD-SDI converter and convert a signal from hdmi to HD-SDI while it is also recording the ProRes - in other words can I get this one box and will it do multiple jobs for me when I use it.

even if I wasn't recording pro-res it would be nice to be able to use it to convert an HDMI to an HD-SDI signal for distribution to client and other monitors.

Dan

If this box does cross input conversion I promise to buy one...

Meaning convert an hd-sdi signal to hdmi and hdmi to hd-sdi. This is the mid-budget DIT's wet dream!

Anyone from AJA out there?

Dan the answer is yes (well Im 90% sure based on what Ive seen used before - havent used a ki pro mini yet of course).

But as a rule regardless of what Input you use, all your outputs are ..... outputting.

So if your using a DSLR capable of a signal outout during recording - this will passthrough the ki pro mini as an output.

Has anybody here used the Ki Pro with the EX1 or EX3?

It seems like the Sony's could create some awesome footage w/ 10-bit output and 10-bit recording.
