AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

BLUESPIDER

DVXuser Ninja
This kind of scared me alittle when a buddy of mine tested out the AJ-SDX900 ($20,000) and the DVX100 ($3,500) and compared the two. He said the 900 was only slightly better looking than the DVX.
Anybody here knows anything about this?

I'm going to ask him for some screen grabs.

BS

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

Please, don't do it. It's a kind of scary ****. A DVX-user who can't use his camcorder is making tests ............ don't try to
convience me.

Be glad you have a good piece of camcorder. A DVX 100A is nothing more than it is. Don't try to fool yourself, it isn't better than a $26.670,- AJ-SDX900 2/3" 3-CCD 16:9/4:3 24P/30P/60i DVCPRO Cinema Camera with CineSwitch Technology and CineGamma Software.

Learn your camcorder and use it. Stop this ridiculous competition with other camcorders. Do something useful with your time.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

I concur, your buddy is either high on the crack or just didn't know how to operate the SDX900. ;D

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

I gotta tell you, I just completed my feature Loaded dice, and I also worked on Tom Savinis Chill Factor. they shot Chill with the SDX-900 and I used the DVX. My footage looks like perfect 16mm. But the Chill Factor footage looks Like 24p that is to sharp, It has a bit of a Video edge that looks sort of Filmic, but sort of not.
Even their DP agreed with me on it.

Go figure.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

You can't tell how the original footage is from this flash-video or other stemps sized videos.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

Know what though - I bet that your average person wouldn't really be able to tell the difference between the SDX and the DVX. Sure, experienced pros can definitely tell, but most viewers are fooled that DVX footage is 16mm! And the DVX footage is definitely more similar to SDX footage than to 16mm...

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

what a crock of sh...i saw side by side footage of noah kadner's formosa(formosamovie.com) shot on the sdx compared to his dvx100/pd150 footage demo at last year's dv expo. huge huge difference!

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

I don't doubt that there's a difference on a side-by-side comparison.

But I'd still say that your average viewer wouldn't be able to tell whether a given piece was shot on an SDX or DVX - only with the comparison would they REALLY be able to tell.

I'm not ragging on the SDX, it definitely IS a better camera. But I'm thinking what the average viewer would notice...

i agree w/ ya mike...i was just responding to the original poster... :D

Who is an average viewer? My grandma couldn't be able to tell if the given piece was shot on a Sony8 or a 35mm Panavision.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

The two cameras look surprisingly close given the difference in price, and a dvx could definitely be used as a B reel for an sdx900. The sdx900 definitely has a sharper image, noticeably more dynamic range, richer colors, and a shallower DOF. Less noise, too. But both cameras give the footage the same feel, and if you light well and shoot well, you can get good images from both. The sdx900 is worth the money, but only if you have that kind of money to spend. Watch Arrested Development on Fox to see what the SDX900's footage looks like (some of that show is also shot on a DVX, but not much.) You'll notice that the dynamic range is much better in the outdoors shots than you'd see with a DVX, and images seem crisper but without sharpening artifacts.

:D LMAO!

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

The SDX900 is a true professional grade camera. You put a good DP on the SDX900 and he/she will give you way better footage than with the DVX100. Larger CCDs, DVCPRO50 and a good lens make quite a difference.

I work in commercials shooting 99% in 35mm. I would never shoot a spot for our clients with the DVX, but I would actually consider shooting with the SDX900....and feel pretty confident about it. It's the difference between "prosumer" and professional-grade.

I hope I don't offend anyone. I still think the DVX is awesome.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

So do I :)

I'd love to shoot with the SDX as well - but I bet your brother's buddy's girlfriend wouldn't notice the difference between the two cams. Unless of course she was Nancy Schrieber or something ;D

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

You can use what ever you like as long as people can enjoy a 7th generation piratcopy VHS film, ;D

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

As part of the religious debate for digital cinema, 2K vs. 4K, I have been to countless side-by-side comparisons of camera’s, projectors and standards converters. People always use the argument that the “average” person can’t tell the difference.

Sure, the “average” person may not be into the technology and often they’re not very good at articulating the differences in ways that film makers want to hear, but the majority of “average” people CAN tell the difference. More than 90% of the time people in these tests pick the higher format.

Give your grandmother some credit, she might surprise you – she might not care about it, but she can probably tell the difference.

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

Well, no matter what I'm sticking with my DVX100. Plus I ain't got 25gees to spend anyway.

How did you make the smoke when the guns were fired? Did you use real guns? Or you did it in post?

Re: AJ-SDX900 & DVX-100a

you know actually when it comes to the average viewer, i agree that most people cant tell the difference. i too ksome sample footage with a DVX a couple weeks ago in 24p, and showed my girlfreind, my mom ( to explain why 3,500 was leaving my wallet), all my uncles etc. they all were insisting "it looks almost the same as your video camera (trv70) you dont neednother one." My dad was the only person who immedatly noticed a significant difference.

so i believe the claim that the common person wont be able to tell the difference between
