AJ-PCS060G a bit like"war" - what is it good for?

Just got my hands on the AJ-PCS060G and it's not quite what I had hoped for or been led to think it was.

I use 32GB cards so I thought the 60Gb internal hard drive would mean I couldn't offload two full 32Gb cards - but if you offload a 32Gb card you can't then offload ANY footage from another card even if it is just a few seconds length clip.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the way the internal drive gets chopped into 4Gb FAT32 partitions.

These are just no use to anyone who is not using 4Gb cards are they?

Why isn't that more clear? Or is it just me?

The P2 Store creates a new partition that's the same size as the card you're offloading, regardless of how much footage is on that card. It makes a clone of the entire card image. So it cannot ever hold two 32GB cards, no. It could do a 32GB and a 16 and an 8, but never two 32's.

The P2 Store is a product whose time has long since passed. It was a bandaid to get folks past the transition time when P2 cards were too small to shoot a days' footage. But nowadays when a single P2 card is bigger (and half the cost) of the entire P2 Store, it becomes a product that doesn't have any relevancy in today's marketplace.

That's not to say it doesn't work; it does still work and for those who are using smaller cards it does still have some applicability, but I wouldn't buy a new one. I'd get the MSU10 if I needed a field hard drive offloading station (or, preferably, the HPG20, but that's a lot more). And actually, I haven't spent for any of those as I find a laptop is a lot less expensive and a lot more capable.

Thanks Barry - that explains what I am seeing completely.

In another recent thread I asked about the possibility of replacing the hard drive with a larger one. I got a reply from a fellow forum member who said he didn't think it was possible because this had been askd many times before. I searched and was only able to find one thread that asked the same question and you had contributed that it couldn't be done.

I'm guessing then that even if I managed to insert a larger drive the firmware wouldn't know how to use anything larger than 60Gb?
Has anyone you know of actually had a go at it and detailed why it wouldn't work?

I know it's unlikely and I'm grasping at straws - it's (even though this is older kit) it - would still have a perfect place in my kit bag if I could offload a couple of cards at least.

Nobody has ever, as far as I know, successfully replaced the drive in a P2 Store. It's been a frequent topic of discussion, but Panasonic said it wouldn't work, and nobody has done it that I've ever heard of.

Nowadays the P2 Store is useful as a USB slot reader, and for offloading smaller cards. Once the 32GB hit, though, that was pretty much the end of needing the P2 Store. And when the "E" series cards came out, that's when it really hit the obsolete pile.
