i have a soft case for my boom pole an some light stands. it's about 40" long. are lines usually leniant about such items being taken into cabins? i know if i check it in they'll **** it up.

just wondering in general what people do when travelling with bulky gear. we have these huge aluminum travel cases that are a pain in the ass and always run up or excess baggage fees. looking for a better way.

10x14x24 or 9x12x25 for most airlines. can't take the boom pole, sorry. (exception being if it's Northwest/KLM as they have a storage area for "large professional items" like stringed instruments or maybe even your Betacam. I can promise you you'll get no love for a 40" boom pole that isn't even valuable!)

I can generally fit my tripod, a couple of small kit stands, and a boom pole inside of a golfing bag. Works well for me. Where were you going to put your tripod, anyway?

I made my own very large "soft" cases out of large duffel bags with very thin plywood panels inside lining all sides (for impact protection), and lots of thick foam (for handling protection). It's amazing how much you can pack into it, and it's very light. Nothing has ever gotten damaged on half a dozen flights so far.

Another option besides the golf bag is a fishing-rod bag. They can be quite large, are padded, and airlines are accustomed to carrying them so you shouldn't have a problem. I was looking at one that could handle three small light-stands, a boompole, and the tripod -- very convenient.

I have a hard plastic golf bag case I've been using for tripods and light stands for years. It also has rollers, and is lightly padded. The airlines don't even weigh it, so I put some heavy stuff in it, like extension cords. The best thing about it is, as previously mentioned, the airlines are equipped to handle these cases. They look like "normal" cases and don't attract attention from handlers and ticketing agents.

when you say they don’t weight it, how does that work? I just show up at check in and they take it without weighting it??
