Ahhhhh Rant Alert - Local Cable

Sorry just needed to complain to some folks that might understand. Comcast Cable in Pittsburg is the only broadcaster I have to still send tapes to. Everyone else takes file transfers. Well, technically Comast does as well, but they have a mess of a time anytime I shoot 24p.

Just for the record I shoot 24p with my DVX 100 B and edit in Avid at 30i, Because I do not shoot in 24pa. The 24p should not have a dramatic impact on my post procedure in a 30i project.

I called Comcast to try and sort out what kind of encoding error might be causing the jittery anomaly. You know, try and figure out if I am missing a setting somewhere, but their engineer just goes on on about how I can't shoot in 24p and that is not broadcast standard and it will not work.

I of course asked about other clients shooting 24p on the national level how they ingest their stuff. He responds no one nationally shoots 24p unless its film.

His only suggestion is to shoot 30i and convert to 24p because....

And I quote:

"You can go from 30 to 24 but not 24 to 30. You can only ever go down never up."

I ask him how familiar he is with 24p shooting and he snaps back "Ohh pretty familiar I have a lot of years in this industry."

Am I missing something here or would this guy be better placed working some where with name tags and hair nets.

Ahhhhhhhh.

Ok I feel better. Thanks Guys

I'm a guy with zero tech aptitude. I can't retain anything and can't understand anything. Just ask Dave Jimerson. Yet, I've worked for guys with years in the industry and I often discover they know much less than I do.

As far as I can tell, sometimes it's simpler to bluff knowledge than actually have it.

I was under the impression that you should be shooting 24pa for broadcast. Then again I have no idea what's happening under the hood when you ingest 24p into a 30i project. I'm guessing Avid adds the pull down?
