Agents

Hey all,

I'm graduating in a few months from college, and I've got quite a few short films, music videos and commercials under my belt (over 50), as well as a pretty good tv show. I'm thinking of hiring an agent to try and get me some writing and directing jobs but I am unsure of a few things about agents.

So here goes my questions:

1. Is it true that agents only make money when you do? Do you have to pay upfront to get representation.

2. How is work distributed? I know agents may handle more than one client so how do they choose who gets what?

3. How does one go about exactly getting an agent. I researched a few agency's (William Morris, Creative Artists, etc.). Do they recruit you or can anyone go to any agency and just impress them enough to get representation.

4. How good are agents really?

Thanks for answering any questions!

An agent only makes money when you do. If you have to give any money up front, its fraud, unless for example ( as an actor ) they put your headshot and resume up on a casting workbook online, which costs something. This is for acting, but the same goes for any agent. No money up front.

question 2 and 3 i wouldnt know cause i dont think its like acting.

and 4) well within the past 6 months i have had the opportunity of auditioning for many major motion pictures ranging from lead to supporting roles. Had i not had her, that would be out of the question. For directing i imagine much of the same still applies, it opens doors.

GL!
