AG-AC90 - SD DVD's in Vegas Pro 10/DVDA5

I recently picked up a AG-AC90 for event work. I am editing in Vegas Pro 10 and when I render mpg2 for SD DVD's they look terrible. I am shooting PH 1080 30P (which I think is really 60i) and using the default MainConcept MPG2 DVDA template in Vegas. I've also tried adjusting bit rates in the encoder, etc., to up the quality but no luck. I've used Vegas & DVDA for years starting with my DVX100 and more recently Canon DSLR's with great results. Any tips for creating SD DVD's from AVCHD files in Vegas?

What you did is exactly what I did to make the AF100 DVD, and it looked great. How is it looking terrible?

30p is 30p, not 60i, by the way.

Hi David - nice to see you're still active here. I remember when you joined back in 2003 :-)

The output looks blocky/mosaic-y - classic low quality mpeg2 DVD. It is primarily around edges/vertical lines and of course it's worse with motion. I was using the default NTSC DVD widescreen MainConcept template in Vegas, but also tried different bit rates, etc to no avail.

As a workaround, I just did a brief test of rendering my AVCHD source files from my VP10 timeline to a 35mbps 720p .mxf intermediary and then using that .mxf file as the basis for my mpeg2 render in DVDA 5.2. The final output looked much closer to what I was expecting. Time-wise it is roughly equal to a 2 pass VBR encode with much better results.

Just so I'm clear, you shot the AF100 DVD with a AG-AC90 and edited/rendered that footage in VP10? What settings/encoder did you use for the mpeg2 render?

In earlier versions of Vegas, I would have done a 720p intermediate as well, but I didn't need to with Vegas 10 - I rendered the 1080 straight to 480 using the DVD Architect 24p DVD template. It was AF100 footage, but being AVCCAM, it was the same as the AC90 footage for these purposes.

Now, it wasn't 30p, and I didn't render to 60i (NTSC), but I didn't have a problem.

If the 720p intermediate works, then maybe you should go that route.
