AFTRA and its implications

I'm currently casting a short film for production this coming fall. Anyway, I am in the process of securing a SAG short film contract in order to use SAG actors and attract a higher caliber of non-union actors in the area. Anyway, I have received several responses to my casting call from AFTRA union members.

Here's the question, does AFTRA have its own set of regulations for its members with regard to films? Do they recognize the SAG system of deferred payment?
I've check their site and have found it very lacking in information concerning their members performing for films.

Anyone navigated these waters before, or have an idea of how AFTRA functions in relation to short films?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

AFTRA people are somehow affiliated with SAG, but the bottom line is that SAG contracts must use SAG performers - period.

I plan on using a Short Film Contract which allows me to cast SAG and non-SAG actors, but just want to make sure I'm not running into a different beast by bringing in a AFTRA member. Basically I want to keep my deferred payment which the SAG contract allows me.
Does AFTRA have different stipulations?

I've looked into it, so I'll jump in and answer my own question for those who may have it in the future. AFTRA/SAG informed me that and SAG contract applies to all professional union actors. Therefore an AFTRA actor can be brought in under the conditions set forth by a SAGindie contract.

Greetings--as an AFTRA (and SAG) member, I'd suggest that you contact the AFTRA Local office nearest you for any further guidance you might need. You can find a a list of all these offices at the AFTRA website, www.aftra.com (click on "AFTRA" at the upper left and you'll see a drop down list). If you happen to be in the New England area, you can call our office at 617 262 8001, and staff will be happy to assist you. Since SAG has jurisdiction over traditional film productions (and shares jurisdiction with AFTRA over video and digital), I believe the information you have is correct. I happen to be on AFTRA's National Board, so I'd appreciate your letting me know how you make out with this. Feel free to contact me directly, if you like, at 617 327 7077 for any further assistance. Good luck.
