Aftereffects problem - Suddenly Jumpy Footage

I've been working in a 1920x1080 24 composition with several HDV clips and up until about an hour ago everything was smooth, ram previewed well, etc.

Then something changed and I may have lost my mind.

All of the video clips now jump up and down/flicker in preview while the animation and stills are solid. I haven't changed anything that I can tell. Of course I could have inevitably clicked something but I wasn't changing pulldown or screwing with any of that.

Any ideas? Thank you.

Well I changed my comp to 29.97 and the jumping went away. Up until a little while ago AE was converting on its own. I wonder what changed?

Update: enabling time stretch on a clip seems to interlace the automagically de-interlaced footage. Am I seeing this right or am I missing something? Thanks in advance dvxers!

What camera is your HDV from? Is it 24p footage in 30i wrapper? (e.g. many canon cameras do this). If so , you have to remove pulldown

The camera is a HVR-A1U. It was shot at 30i I believe. Do you know the pulldown settings for it in AE?

I also read that importing and editing M2T clips in AE is a big no no. This could be part of the crashing feeling I get.

You should check your footage to be sure what you have first. If your comp settings match you should have no problems. e.g. if it's true 30i then settings should match and you don't need to remove pulldown. I only asked this because you said started with a 24p composition, then changed to a 30i comp....so something is amiss here

If it's 24p in 30i, you can try some of the manual modes, but I don't use AE for IVTC - it usually doesn't get it right or leaves combing or blends. I usually use avisynth

PDR,

Thanks for helping me out with this. The A1u was recording through on location and it appears to be 29.97 footage. After I ran into the initial problems I had AE guess the pulldown and the footage smoothed out and I put it on a 30fps timeline. But I'm seeing some severe combing in AE after I adjusted pulldown settings. I'm wondering if I need to convert this footage with some intermediate tool before trying to work with it in AE.

If it's 30i footage, you shouldn't be removing pulldown (disable it). It should work natively just importing the clip and dropping it on the make new comp icon, just make sure you have the field order set correctly (usually upper field first for HDV)

I've done projects in AE with 30i HDV .m2t footage natively without need for digital intermediate (on PC). It's only when you want to remove pulldown properly with avisynth (if you have 24p in 30i), that you want to use a digital intermediate
