AfterEffects 5.5 help

Hi everyone. I have A.E. 5.5 prod. bundle and am a brand new user. I have been playing around with it but I can't get a good file from it.
e.g. I bring a avi into a.e. and play with it. Save file as a avi and watch it back. the file looks crappy like I encoded it for a 56k modem. I have checked all the settings but can't figure out what I have done wrong. Any help?????

I would guess that 1) the source avi file is already compressed and 2) the resaving as is akin to opening a jpeg file, making changes and just saving again which compresses over the same data.

So try rendering out with higher settings such as "Lossless" in the Output render
