After uploading to Vimeo, footage is blown out? file looks fine coming out of PPro

Hey everyone,

I have been editing a short video for a local dance company. Inside Premiere Pro CS4 the video looks fine. Once exported from PPro as H.264 the video still looks great and exactly as it looked within PPro during editing.

However once I upload it to my Vimeo account, it gets a huge highlights / contrast boost. Anyone know what might be causing this? Is this just Vimeo's compression? Some sort of gama shift? I looked around in PPro CS4 and couldn't find any way to change the workspace color or gama to make the preview match the blown out look of Vimeo. At least then I could edit as my audience will see the final product and compensate by lowering the highlights a bit. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks!

The problem with that idea is that you have no way of knowing or controlling how a viewer's monitor is calibrated. You never adjust to the audience. You adjust to the science of color and light, using a properly calibrated external TV. If a viewer's monitor is off, be it a computer monitor for web playback or a TV for DVD/Blu-ray playback, there's really nothing you can do about it. That viewer will not see the correct image until they get their monitor calibrated.

Sure I understand that aspect of editing and output. In this case I know my current monitor represents the video in a way that is acceptably close to how a majority of my audience will be viewing it. However, if the video is given the effect of +10 brightness after I upload it to Vimeo, that is not acceptable to me, which is why i would like to know how to solve this problem.

Only response i got on the Vimeo forums was:

"I suspect the levels shift and slight posterization of your clip is due to compression algorithms. I've tried H.264, the Vimeo HD preset in the CS5 media encoder and finally got decent black levels and bit streams by uploading High Quality HDTV. Go figure, NTSC color space! The file sizes are not much larger than the previously mentioned formats and you can choose min/max bit rates etc. Good luck."

I tried uploading HDTV codec exports and different types of H.264 and Flash, but same problem continues...

Look up color profiles and how to assign them to the video. Sorry can't explain now, I'm at work and dont have time. But google "premiere color profile", sounds like vimeos compression is changing the gamma.

Looked up "premiere cs4 color profile" and it seems there is no way to change this in premiere cs4. however some do recommend bringing the footage into AE where you can change the color profile. Anyone have experience with this and know what profile i would want to use to match Vimeo?

Thank you for everyones responses so far!

Surprised premiere doesn't do it. I always set it in ae because that's where I do my color grading. Still at work, and don't have time, but if someone doesn't do a writeup on it before tonight I'll get you.
