After Effects "ripple" filter question.

Hi, I just had a question about After Effects 6.5, theirs a specific shot i need to create for a project. It involves the "ripple" filter in AE in the Distort section. When i apply the filter close to the edge of the frame, you can ofcourse see black as the sides of the frames are distorted or rippled by the effect. Is their any way to fill in the black dead space with another color? specifically white. I would just enlarge the scale of the frame so you dont get the dead space but that ofcourse would kill resolution.

Thanks for the help.

Create a Layer _> New -> Solid
Set to white, same size as comp.
Place this below your clip in the timeline.
Other option is to drag another copy of your clip to below the processed on in the timeline.
This will leave 'normal' image for borders.

Thanks for the response Scottdvx100. I actually already tried that and it doesnt help. The original footage still is black in the distorted areas of the corners of the frame. Logically what you said should work but it's like it's creating it's own layer of black that can't be eliminated.

I'm completely stuck.

It may be important for me to add that i'm not applying the ripple effect mainly on the main footage, i have several adjustment layers that i apply the ripple effect on and it works and effects the main footage.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks allot.

scale your clip to just a bit larger than the frame size (say 110% or so), then when the edges distort, they're off the frame.

If it didn't work then you may actually have black on the edge of your orginal image. Consider cropping that off before the filter. If not then it's the issue of the adjustment layer. Consider applyign the effect directly to a copy of the clip or to a subcomp.

Or maybe turn the composition color to white?

If there are definate blacks being formed by the effects and they are true R0,G0,B0 blacks, mayhaps you can key them out?

Thanks for the help guys, when i apply the effect directly to my main footage layer then the trick of putting a solid white layer underneith actually works. I'll be doing that from now on instead of working with adjustment layers.

Thanks guys.
