Very frustrated here. Currently doing a search on the site for this but no threads of relevance popped up at first so I'll take another pass.

A somewhat simple question. On a Vista PC, in AE CS3, what settings do you use to output the best looking video for the web (specifically Vimeo)?

I exported a 720x480 HD avi clip (video from an HV20) from Vegas 7 into AE (not sure if it's still HD. The setting I chose may have downrezzed it). Before I upload it to the web, I want to remove pulldown and deinterlace (hence why I took it into AE). For the record, I know I'm supposed to remove pulldown before editing, but I need to have this on the web quick and don't have time to start all over.

Now all I want to know, is what settings to use to make it look good and not be a tremendously large file. Everybody tells me to use quicktime and the h.264 codec, but for some reason my computer doesn't like encoding in quicktime. Every time I try it, the audio in the finished movie occasionally goes, "gssshhhhhhhhhhh", ruining the movie. This has left me with avi (or some other unknown format you may know about). Can someone give me some guidance here. I'm lost.

My workflow is

Export from Vegas as an uncompressed avi or quicktime file.

Import into AE amd do what you need to do, again rendering as a quicktime, uncompressed, animated sequence.

Bring into Sorenson Squeeze and render as Quicktime using the 480p preset. You can also render an flv from AE and create a flash file using Adobe Flash.

Hope this helps

Jim, I'm a little foggy on the details of sorenson squeeze. I see that pop up in my encoding options every once in awhile. but i've enver installed the program. do i need to install Squeeze in order to render to this preset? Or is it already installed with my after effects? thanks.

try a quicktmie movie using the animation codec at best settings. It's generic and it holds up well.

To remove pulldown in AE right click the clip in the project window and choose "interpolate footage" a pop up menu with all the interpolate options will let you choose remove pulldown (or add it if it doesn't have it , or change frame rate etc etc etc)

"Sorensen Squeeze" is a separate application from AE that uses Sorensen Compression to compress video footage. You may have noticed Sorensen compression output in AE but that is just because Sorensen is a compression method.

I believe Grinner is suggesting that you render out of AE using the QT animation codec. Then import that file into Sorenson Squeeze (or any other compression app) to handle the web compression.

Not sure if this would be a valid workflow, since I'm not that familiar with the After Effects output settings... but, if you can output a Quicktime reference movie from AE then you can bring that into Quicktime pro. From there, you should be able to output a file with h.264 and decent audio with a reasonable file size.

Your uncompressed (or QT/animation compressed) intermediate files will always be large you need to render out a large uncompressed master at some point anyways.

You shouldn't be doing a full AE render just to output clips to a different codec.
