After Effect or Flash

I mostly operate camera and edit footages in Vegas. Recently, I receive some works in TV commercial, so I determine to be involved deeper with effect editing. I have learned some basics in programs such as After Effect 6 and Flash 8. I feel both programs are powerful, but I must choose one program and specialize to only one. I am debating right now. Please help me out of pointing to the advantages and disadvantage in such area as tutoring availablity or learning curve. Thanks.

well if you like building web and writing actionscript go Flash. you must love actionscript, else it is gonna be hard. most people do not know that they can build cool programs in it like AI and blue-screen software or traffic simulator. (these have I witten). but this software is for web development

else if you choose AE you are going to deal with videos and compositng. it is a lot different.

I do not feel that Flash8 is an effect editor... F8 is not for film effecting.

and AE is a compositor. If you want really cool effects you will need cg, ie in maya.

Fusion smokes After Effects

It also only runs on PC, and costs over 5 times as much as AE. There's still a reason all the big broadcast houses are using AE. Fusion is more in the class of Shake than AE. AE smokes them both for motion graphics work. Fusion, Shake, etc are strong at compositing. AE is the best out there for mograph work. Each tool has its strengths and weaknesses.

And in the mindset of cost must make it better, Inferno smokes em all...

I do all my Motion work in Fusion. AFX is great for it but It really is just as easy to do it in Fusion.

To each their own, of course. My point was AE is widely used, vs a small % using Fusion.

I wasnt in the Mindset that More $$ = Better
I find Fusion Faster and more robust is all :D

DFX5 $1,295.00 add modules as needed
Copy your AE plugins to its ae plugin folder and go

Oops, I was just getting my price info from http://www.eyeonline.com/Web/EyeonWeb/Buying/PriceList.aspx It says a seat of fusion5 is about 4-5k.

I would definitely choose After Effects, if I had a choice of AE or Flash. After Effects can export anything as a flash movie, html included. So in a way, you get both with AE. What's Fusion? I thought my After Effects 6.5 Pro was expensive. YIKES! Why don't you just have Industrial Light & Magic do your compositing. No, just kidding, I've heard great things about Fusion....I had to get what I could afford, especially after the camera cost.

You won't find any big houses using Fusion just yet. They'll be bangin' on Inferno/Flame, Shake, etc with a sprinkling of After Effects.

So much for friendly

Its something you cant do in AE

3D space and particles
No Loaders, no images, No plugins...Just Fusion

The Orphanage,Blur, CafeFX, Digital Dimension,Rainmaker guess they arnt big

How about EA they are fairly small

Happy holidays

Sorry for the rudeness, I thought it was a joke.

AE also has 3d space, yada yada. I didn't realize this would turn into a "fusion rulez" troll argument. If you can clearly explain the benefits you feel Fusion has over AE, please feel free. I think you'll find it's not an easy argument. Especially with the userbase and community AE enjoys (and those houses you mentioned may own a copy, but they still rely on the big toys for their marquis-level work). I do think Fusion has one benefit, and that's a nodal working space. Something AE could really use. Other than that, I can't think of a thing.

Like i've said before, they're all just tools. It's all about the hands that are operating them. But, if that clip you posted is any indication of Fusion's output, I think i'll pass. Quickly.

I agree, all the apps have their own 15 minutes of fame (only kidding about the Fusion cracks), but in the end IMO you get more for your money with AE.

I'm right there with you on your community remark, kai. If you want to learn a program fast, make sure it's a program with many users. Where there's a large community, there's usually a lot of knowledge floating around.

Hey all-

Just wanted to clarify and open things up: In this discussion I wasn't intending to hurt SalaTar's feelings. Sorry if I came across that way. Merry Christmas guys...
