After an actors success...

why does it seem that they are acting for the camera and never fully immersing themselves into a character?

Is there some form of film that requires this?

I hate that ****! When a director and an actor don't get the emotion right it makes me cringe. In New York I see millions of ****ing idiots walking around and acting and talking like the characters in these shitty movies. What is with this act? Have people lost their minds? Are we all living in our dreams? These people really do strike me as living in their heads and not reality.

Are you talking about just actors or New Yorkers in general.?

Because you can not compare a New Yorker with other Americans. The fact being that living in this city is a reality alternate to what most Americans live with in the day to day. For some its the dream and others its the nightmare...I have noticed however more and more people in this city look exhausted. Maybe they're stuck in their own dreams. I know i retreat to my own little world everytime i step on a subway, hail a cab, or wait in line for anything...

Sorry, man. I've come back to this post for the fourth time and I'm still not sure what you're saying. :undecided

I'm aligning new yorkers to bad acting.

t's like they're living in vanilla sky or something, new yorkers (oh brother!). I just bought that movie last weekend because Tom's character and acting reminded me of my view of new yorkers (i'm sure there are others and it is not all new yorkers) and I watched it again and listened to the commentary and finally realized that that movie actually made a whole parking lot of sense.

I think this happens when a person does not have rational knowledge this happens. They just work the scripts and see the surface of things. I think this all stems from not doing any work, or worthwhile work.

Blaine, you know when people it becomes "cool" to be a director, everyone starts to think they can do it and begin to hype things up, flatter themselves, etc. They all want to play the game for some attention; to align themselves to something great. But only very few have the heart to do it and those few are discouraged because of this fakeness. Well, that feeling is what I am talking about.

I think I understand what you're saying now.

New York is a world removed from Southern California.

New Yorkers are like a cast that has no story. They are all pretenders drawing associations where there are none, being passionate about nothing, and finding greatness in meaninglessness (if that is a word). They are occupied with creating the image but have no values. They are like badly casted actors, playing a role to which they have no experience for. They are preoccupied with imitating the life of another.

When you set up a joke and the actor reacts but expects it, the motions are unnatural. Their world is a set-up. That is what a new yorker is.

You guys get it? Good!

I am just focusing on what I see in new yorkers at any one time. I am not limiting people to this.

Maybe its not that New yorkers are bad actors but there day to day lives has become so fake with trying to be more then ordanary that they themselves act out there lives. Don't get me wrong not picking on anyone or an area as im from Australia but from what ive seen on TV NYers seem to be trying to win the rat race the same as people here in Australia in those cyrcles are. We call them yuppies and they dress up fake and act like they have money even though there credit cards are maxed out on big dinners and those BMW's. As they say life imatates art.

But what do I know Im just bored and surfing the forum.

are you saying something like this:they are like someone who works in the IT doesn't even know what DOS means-, because he has already forgotton it. ?

You must be talking about the trendy SoHo kids over on the lower east side.

Because what you say is not indicative about New Yorkers or the spirit of NYC.

And TV could not be farther from the truth for my foreign friends who have not been here. The typical New Yorker is a hard working person who goes about doing what they have to do to make ends meet while enjoying the cornucopia of culture and thrills that come with living in one of the largest city's in the world.

Our world is not set up. What real new yorkers face everyday is a reality that has existed for close to 400 years when the Dutch first set up a metropolis here. I don't know what you experience dude but it is not the real new york. You want that you let me know and i'll take you around all the 5 boroughs cause NYC is not just a neighborhood of the island of manhattan which is what it sounds like to me is what you're describing.

Just out of curiosity are you from NYC? Or did you move here for A) college, B) work, or C) "to try to make it?" Just be honest cause I don't judge. We take all types here.

WOW.... What a dumb statement. No offense. lol.

I don't know if understand this whole thread but I wouldn't only limit this fakeness of people to just new york, LA is the same, go to miami same thing.
It's not a specific place, it's the big cities where there's a lot of people who are so taken by hollywood and television that they think that the only way to live is to live like film characters or someone from television.

films and television are meant to be just entertainment but nowadays it seems like it's more of a manual of how to dress, how to talk, how to live. I know a ton of people here in LA and NY that behave like that but they don't have their own identity only what they emulate from the media.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that most people from NY, LA or miami are like that because it's not true. there's still "normal" people in all these cities

You're going to have a hard time finding actors for your project if this is what you think of them.
And what kind of film discussion is this??

If we're talking about the influences of pop culture here then limiting it to city's is naive.

Pop culture influences are evident anywhere that there's a television set or internet connection.

Suburbs, small towns, big city's...you'll find the influences of pop culture anywhere you look. Fusionist i think your point is ignorant. Either that or you've misrepresented your argument.

Any attempt to define a group of people seems a bit ridiculous to me.
If you can't see people for their individual traits then you're missing out on the best aspects of humanity, in my opinion.

I thought for a minute back there that I might understand what you were talking about, not that I agree with it since I've little experience with NY or New Yorkers, but after this post I realize that I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. It sounds like a ramble. :undecided

No, the Ramble is just a section of Central Park.

Don't go there at night unless you know the answer to the question "Hips or lips?"
