after 3 interesting weeks this is what i find from this tool:
I shot a commercial (in 50i) with my DVX the day after I got it! I tweaked the F1 a little, but not much to stay save. I immediatley fell in love with its intuitivity and the way buttons are ranged etc. For those basic settings I was also very pleased with the outcome, although I had to adjust it in post a little.
I then spent several days to match my DVX to the BetaSP cam we have in the house. It took me a while and I was not too happy at first, but 10 days ago we had an editor from our national terrestric TV network to work with me. They have guidelines similar to BBC and I shot Beta and gave my DVX to a second cameraman (who was absolutelky stunned by the way he could handle it). The ORF-editor never realized that the footage was from a non-Beta. We had realtime timecode running and I captured before he arrived, so he thoguth it were two Betas....;-)
Finally I got time to work in 25p. At first i had strobing on a few shots. but then I once moved the tripod a few meters and the rec was on. watching it in the NLE I realized despite the aprupt movement there was no strobing at all. So Barry was right: it is the operators fault. Since then I practivced hard. and I watched film. there are hardly ever fast movements in any film. even in actionflicks there is only fast movement following something in the foreground. or it is so fast that there cannot be strobing again. it is all in the short cuts giving the impression of fast movement.
I am still learning, but my 2nd 25p expetience was this http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=23370
my first will be posted tomorrow. a clip from heavy snowfall in a swiss mountain village. It´ll be up soon.
One thing about the strobing I noticed was this: we have an older small TV in our studio that shows strobing where my own newer TV (but still a CRT) dióesnt show it at all. I tried the 7 second rule and on my TV it is crystal clear, while in the old little one it gives a slight strobe (at shutter off BTW).
anyway: i guess soon i will shoot 25p exclusively if not working for networks when matched to BetaSP or DigiBeta, I only don´t know if I should charge 16mm hour-rates or not....
