I'm actualy a bit afraid of al those "how to make a big budget film with no money"....

True, starters have to make films without the big budget to show what they can.

But... with those articles about "how to make big budget film with no money"... investors, sponsors, .... Will think "oww.. look, they don't need that lot of money".

But... people who do this for living (DOP, soundpeople, wardrobe, make up, AD, directors, producers, VFX editor, editors, composer, sound designer, foley artist,....) like also to sometimes do a payed job.

I was recently involved in the production of a 50 min historical drama. The production value was 100.000 Euros. Still nobody was paid. The money went into accomodation and catering, insurances, train tickets etc etc. You can google "Die Unbedinten" to find out more about it. Everybody did it for either fun, supporting a friend (like the director or DoP) or for their personal portfolio. The actors e.g. said that they like student's projects every now and then because they often are allowed to play more interesting characters instead of another lawyer/teacher/priest etc on TV. In Germany, you could be a regular additional character (like Ted the lawyer from Scrubs e.g.) on a TV show and still be not that famous.

So, with no money at all you are very limited and will find yourself making more and more compromises. You can still create something special though. Let it be small and meaniningful and artistically mature. Don't try another StarWars fan movie or any kind of action movie...

Just my 2 incoherent c.

I totaly agree that traintickets, accomodation, catering costs a lot of money. But... with 100.000 euro's... there has to be some for crew I find and postproduction.

It's getting "normal" that people work for free... Just go to the store and say at the cassier "ow.. I'm on lowbudget..."$

Don't understand me wrong, I also do things for free because I like to do it... But.. it's getting... normal... Even commercial production starts to cry "oow we don't have money booooh"

Not to the scale of that production. It was the final project of two students of the Munich Academy for Film and TV (FFM). They were backed up by a TV station and ARRI, shot on film and made it look authentic 1819. You could say it was a labour of love. And you can spend that much money on "everything else" but the crew. If you'd wanted to shoot this AND pay everybody the price would increase tenfold.

Well students are the ones I like to help for free.

But still... there are production companies who do have the money to pay the crew, but likes to keep it for themself.... Or not ?
