Affordable yet quality deck? Suggestions?

Could anyone recomend the cheapest deck and monitor which would not result in a loss of tape or quality during editing? (aside from the dvx itself?) and provides an "acurate enough" rendition?

True, that deck may be inexpensive, but it lacks the robust internals of a VTR made for editing. If I were you, I would take a look at the sony dsr-11. Its about 800 dollars more, but gives you the ability to record and play back from full size cassettes, as well as record in the DVcam format.

If you don't want to break the bank you might try a Sony GVD1000. Costs about $940.00. I've been using one quite reliably for a couple of years.

thanks fatdaddy, could you explain for us novices what rs-232 is and if it's worth the extra $800 over the Sony GVD1000? Also does anyone know if these decks will work for tapes from the new HD version also?

RS232 is:
Short for recommended standard-232C, a standard interface approved by the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) for connecting serial devices. In 1987, the EIA released a new version of the standard and changed the name to EIA-232-D. And in 1991, the EIA teamed up with Telecommunications Industry association (TIA) and issued a new version of the standard called EIA/TIA-232-E. Many people, however, still refer to the standard as RS-232C, or just RS-232.

See this link for a complete tutorial on RS232:

RS232 as it relates to video recorders is simply a way to control a deck or camera using a PC or other device like an editing controller. I think most people use the firewire/ 1394 interface to control a deck or cam with a non-linear system. It's nice to have it but not worth the extra money unless you cannot use firewire.

Regular DV decks will not be able to transcode tapes recorded in HDV. You would have to use one of the new decks by Sony or JVC. The new HVX200 will not be recording HD/ 100 Mbps signals to tape at all. Its HD recording will be done on P2 memory cards so you needn't worry about that. Anything you record in DV on the HVX200 to tape should playback in any DV deck if all things go as planned.
