Hi guys! I'm working on the budget for the feature Im going to shoot next year and I would like to know if anyone knows where I can get a cheap s16mm rental package that includes video assist(if possible). I live in utah so the closes possible would be great. Dont worry about checking utah rental houses, they're expensive at least 1300 a day for a complete package. I'm looking in between 200 or 350 a day.

thanks again!

Heh...rent an HDV camera. Funny.

$1,300 a DAY? You can rent a 35mm package for that much per WEEK in larger markets.

When renting a s16mm package you basically have two options. 1) Rent from a respected rental house; or 2) Hire a DP who happens to be a s16 camera owner/op. Keep in mind that a rental house will require insurance. You can usually rent an Arri SR3 for about $500 a day. An older camera, such as the SR2 might rent for $200 per day.

Call around to several rental houses and ask for a quote. Sometimes it's better to tell them what your budget is and what your needs are. Something to remember: Most rental houses work on a 3 day rental week. This means you get the camera for a whole week and only pay for 3 actual rental days. Handy to know when renting.

Also, you need to determine what your production needs will be from the camera. There are many models of s16mm cameras and each have different capabilities (such as variable frame rates, video assist, MOS). What kind of lenses will you need - Zoom or prime? Color video assist or will black and white do? Filters? What about camera assist?

Your best bet may be to hire an owner/operator in the Utah area. Check mandy.com or productionhub.com , both professional resources for the film industry.

Look for a DP that owns a package.

Just expect to be required to absolutely have an insurance cert at that rate...not many people are going to let their camera go out for cut rate AND put themselves at risk.

A 16SR I without tap and an older 10-100 should go for that price.

250-350 for a S16 with video tap, len, magazines etc is not realistic.
you might find somebody willing to give you that price BUT if you are doing a budget for NEXT year you should put in realistic price as that person/rental house willing to say 250 today might not say 250 next year ...

budgets should have realistic prices - then when you actually go to shoot you try to come in UNDER those prices = you have extra $$ and/or you're on budget vs. starting overbudget and you can't even pick up a camera because you didn't budget real prices...
