Affordable monitor

Once again I'm coming back here on this matter, the last time being a couple years ago, to see what 7" monitor has proven cost effective in actual field use.

There seems to be a jump, which is probably a wrong idea of mine, from around $300 (Lilliput types) to more than $1,100 (Ikan and Marshall), and not very much in between. At least no mentioned models that people are actually using and praising. My search here didn't find any.

The other question, which I don't think has gone forward, is if there is any tablet or netbook than can be linked to a video camera. Is there any?

It's interesting that until now this topic had 172 views and no one had anything interesting to say about their experience with the monitors they have used? Come on, guys, do share what good and bads you had with monitors. Preferences (if any) and all that.

Most viewfinders seem to cut-off parts of the frame, and some are not too useful for critical focus. Both things are a problem if you plan to screen your video on a large screen, particularly with large sensor cameras.

In my case I have been using a Philips PET1000 for long time for this, which is a DVD player with a 10" screen. Problems with it are: it's SD; it's heavy; it's large; 1/8" connector. Advantages are: large screen; accurate 16:9 frame; good contrast and colour; good battery; good price.

I'm willing to swap the large screen for something lighter that is also HD. Video battery is essential.

I think 5.6" is too small a screen. 7" should be the absolute minimum, or larger.

Too large and it gets difficult to hold it with an arm though.

It's hard to find larger than 7" at a lower price

i have a 9" Marshall (VL-CD9D) which is quite nice but expensive compared the 7" options out there

It runs a little hot and it is a battery pig. It can take canon and Sony camcorder batteries but is probably best suited to be run off of a pro power battery solution like Sony V mount or Anton Bauer.

The software is pretty good, no RGB parade but it does have a waveform and all the usual stuff

lots of connectivity options with both SDI and HDMI available

front button are customizable

Its a solid pro monitor

So you don't think that 8" Ikan or any of those 7" or 9" Manhattans are any good?

The Ikan seems to be a recent release, but I think I read something about one Manhattan here.

I've been using the Marshall 7 inch V-LCD70MD monitor which costs about $800 with HDMI ports. ( it's upgradeable to SDI )

It's the best monitor I've owned to date. It works flawlessly, and is bright enough to be used in daylight conditions. ( 800 nits )

You can buy generic Sony 970 batteries for about $35 each, which will run this monitor for about 6-8 hours.

Very happy with this monitor.

It seems to belong to the same family as the 9" Marshall mentioned above. They both look awesome.

This 7" Marshall looks more affordable and better speced than its Ikan counterpart, the D7W.
