Affordable HMIs

I just got my 800. They didn't ship my barn-doors honeycomb or soft-box but they are looking into it. Next day delivery to the Valley.

It is bright! Can't wait till it get's darker outside. So I should get UV filtering gels right?

You might want to measure it, but according to their website it has quite a low emission:
UVA Emission @ 1M = 0.1mw/cm2 (sunlight midday = 5-10mw/cm2)
UVB Emission @ 1M = less than 0.0003 uw/cm2

(the high UV that was discussed here was particularly relevant to the higher wattage HID lights for plants)

I don't have a light meter or any other fancy DP tools. But I'll take some stills of my little (white) slate with the HVX on the white balance preset of 5600K and post them tonight, anything else I could do?

So no filters necessary to protect our eyes... cool

Hey Latin,
I know you just commited to HMI 5600k, but if you are interested in a Tungsten(3200k) 2000w fresnel, I know where to get them for $75. These are monster lights though, not super portable.

I need to whore my fiance out for a little while first, anyone interested? lol
but sure call me up, I'm gonna see if I can take those stills now

Lol, I keep telling my blonde actress wife that if I just posted some of the pictures i have of her online that I could have a lot more money to buy gear. For some reason I've yet to convince her.

Amen! j/k LOL...

Ok, so as soon as my render is done I'll take a picture of some stuff including
the back of my little slate, lit only by the Alzo 800 4 feet away, with only the protective scrim on it (which is black).
Let me know now if you want different ettings, I am planning on taking it with
DVrack with the HVX, with Cine D gamma, Master Ped -1, all else set at 0, shutter
length at 1/60th, in 720p.

Sorry for not doing anything fancy I think it's kinda soft too. So I left the iris wide open and I got nothing with 100% zebras... 80% was all over the place.

I opened it in Photoshop and different spots give me randomly diferent RGB values but they seem to remain pretty much proportionally similar. I got
R: around 240
G: around 250
B: around 250

I guess the slate is pure white... ? It is the smaller one from Filmtools.

You know... I don't think it was on for more than 5 minutes which is the warm up time required to get rid of visible flicker and color shifting... might have to do it again... and take my time... not used to that (or the camera for that)

I almost bought a 2000 (or "2400") today, but as tempting as it was I need something with a tiny source to get clear edges on shadows...

Oh, the ballast is super quiet, completely quiet... I'll even get a sound clip of it with my Oktava when it comes in if you guys want... lol... 10 minutes sounds better like the wise thing to do

Okay, we managed to slap a 1000W plant HID light (MH) into a Fresnel.
Can post specs if anyone wants to know the nitty gritty.
We know how to improve it already, but for about $450.00 we have a 1k HID fresnel. It puts out some wicked light, and is focusable.

Very interested. Particularly in a lower price point. I've been looking for a small source of fair quality to buy a quanity of for a while.
