affordable 35mm adapter

I just received a price quote including shipping and the adapter for Canon EF lenses and after currency conversion it was somewhere in the $1200 range. This is for the SGPro, which I've been told will ship late May and there are a few slots left open on that shipment. With the HVX though, there's a step down adapter that they do not sell and I have no idea what something like that would run.

look at the brevis. it rules! you dont even need rails. you can just attach it if you need to. ( it should be attached to rails though ) the brevis also has different diffuser elements for different softness and DOF options. And with several side by side comparisons the brevis always comes out on top as far as light loss goes. which is a big problem with 35mm adapters. Also Dennis is a great guy who routinely goes above and beyond for people. Seriously, look at the brevis35.

You will be more than happy with you Sgpro. ;) Trust me.

You need a 72-82 step ring. they are like 20-30$ or so. I dont use one though. I made my Sgpro into a Soft mount liek the M2. I bought a 72mm Still photo rubber lens hood, like a sunshade, and fixed it to the end of the SGpro's Achromat to block extraneoud light. i find it puts less stress o nthe HVX. The main reason i dislike Brevis/Letus Adapters is that they put aLL the weight of the adapter and leses on the Threaded mount of the HVX/DVX. there are 4 tiny retainer screws that hold that whole assembly on. Thats WAY to risky for my taste. The beauty of the soft mount is, should God forbid, the camera ever fall, there is a point where the stress of an imact can be released.

I have a Go35 also, which is Very nice. But it too is a Direct link model. I am always EXTRA careful when using it. Despite the fact that i have special Rails for it.

T, the Brevis can be mounted 100% solidly and safely with our brevis-to-rails mount. When mounted properly, I routinely pick up the entire rig (XH-A1, rails, battery pack, marshal monitor, mattebox, follow focus) using the Brevis as a handle. That's where the balance point is. For use with follow focus and mattebox, they all get mounted this way anyway.

Many use the adapter on their cameras with no rails (Aram Bauman has shot hours, and hours of footage....off rails). Since inception, we've had absolutely zero complaints, damaged threads, or for that matter any issues related to camera threads whatsoever. We have however had plenty of great comments on painless setup in seconds.

The Brevis does have a designed in impact release point in front of the achromat. I inadvertently tested it myself when my entire XH-A1 rig on tripod was knocked over. Zero damage to any parts.

All of these adapters are better off with some rails or support. the Brevis will work without it, but its strange to complain about the brevis because it can be used without support. if you want rails use it that way.

The Brevis clearly has some great features and Dennis's support and constant improvements are great. redrock also takes great pictures. The most interesting things you've said about teh SGPro are that it can be adjusted for speed on the outside ( very good) and that it is sharp.

Sharpness and speed are the 2 biggest problems in these adapters. i would like to see someone compare the sharpness on the SGPro with the others. Dennis seems to have the edge on speed with the Brevis and the CF1 seems to have more resolution as well - also greater DOF which can be a plus.

An older thread somewhere on the web compared the Redrock, Brevis and SGPro and the SGPro looked much sharper, but Phillip the guy doing it admitted he hadn't spent much time on the set-up and he ended up buying a Brevis as I recall and is happy with the sharpness so that might say something about his tests. I'd like to try out just the SGPro achromat on any of these.

I have a redrock and just bought a Brevis as a second adapter. i'll let you know what I think once it is has been manhandled in the field, but i have bet my pocketbook. I would love to see the SGPro though. Maybe they will all be at NAB though I doubt we'll see a side by side.

i think the SGpro/brevis are the sharpest that ive seen over all, including the Mini35. At this point its more a factor of price (even thats pretty close depending on exchange rate) and prefered form factor. All these guys make great products. i jsut have my preferences, thats all. I love me some Sgpro, and im never disappointed by it. Im almost positive i can get similar results with a Brevis, but its just the flexibilty of the Sg i like. Somethign about the spinning GG (cause the M2, mini 35 has this charachteristic too), lets you crank up the shutterpeed, and close down the Iris to F22 at the same time with no artifacts.

also;
I didint know you made a "direct mount". I though it was that caivision ledge that just held up the bottom. thats great actually.

TimuCivan - Did you ever personally do a direct comparison of the SGPro sharpness to a Brevis or other adapter. Unless there's a careful side by side I don't know how to be sure which is sharper.

ive been meaning to get ahold of another brevis. but noone i know has an fd mount for it.

SGPRO R2 was my choice of adaptor for my HVX. Its easy to put onto the HVX. Works like a dream. In fact Wayne who is the maker of the SGPRO sets up the adapter and rails so that its ready to use for your camera out of the box.

Also he's now working on SGPRO R3. Also he's built mounts for not just Canon, Nikon but also for PL and OCT-19.

The only thing I think it needs is two covers for the openings for when the unit isn't in use.

Apart from that great product. I can't wait to see the follow focus he's working on.

Thanks
