LOL! Just saw one of these in action today.

Surrounded by DSLR's and here I am considering shooting film.

What everyone is going through now is NO DIFFERENT than what we all went through. We all had to learn, somehow or other, those hard lessons, because we thought, just like all the new users think, that there's some shortcut here or there that'll catapult them to success, and that the only thing holding them down is the cost of equipment.

After getting full access to the gear, we can discover how untalented/lazy we are really fast and pursue a different career or hobby. Owning the gear allows us to get to the crossroads faster. Money lost on depreciation is nothing compared to the time we save:)

Seriously? A film camera, or THAT film camera? I'm talking about the Chinon Pacific 200/8XL. Man, the ad for that thing was just mesmerizing. I'm wasting far too much time googling to see if I can find an image of the ad... and I remember thinking that that big film magazine sticking out of the top, boy, "THAT's what's gonna separate me out from all the wannabes! It'll look like a REAL movie camera!"

Otis, I don't know how many people will agree with you, but -- you are speaking the truth. Far more people think filmmaking is for them, than actually have the talent and determination and stick-to-it-ive-ness that it demands. The truth is, if it's not cut out for you, or better yet, if you're not cut out for it, then the sooner you find that out, the better off you will be and the happier your life can be, as you can put it away and move on to whatever it is that you're truly good at.

This camera seems pretty cool. But AVCAM on SD cards over AVC-Intra on P2 cards seems like a slap in the face. They give us the features we want but then cripple it with a prosumer codec. I don't get it. Will this camera have a big brother that's the "real" deal?

What's not to get? They're keeping it cheaper for students, film-schools, event, and ultra low budget market, knowing full well that pros can just add a P2 recorder and record using the uncompressed HD-SDI out.

urg
Pana should just re release the GH1 without AGC and with an added uncompressed HD-SDI out.
Body only at $799 would help get their market share back a bit and they don't have to do too much work. Might help pave the way.
Jan I hope you read that.

Ha! Found it!

Feast your eyes on THIS, gentlemen...

Man, in 1980, that was THE STUFF. That thing right there... that was all you needed.

Not to derail the discussion here :) But just FYI - the wishlist/suggestion post won't be updated again and will stay as it is for now. We can continue to make recommendations in this thread - but the time for suggestions is now well past (according to the powers that be).

This thread will still be active - but the list will stay as it is (for now at least).

Might we look forward to more news sometime soon from the powers that be? Will Barry Green be getting a pre-production model in the near future? The excitement starts to build right now!

Oh, you can bet I've been lobbying! But the powers that be, while absorbing all we suggest, are being rather silent about what we can expect from them. Seriously I wouldn't expect to see anything for months. Maybe they'll have something to show by IBC-time?

This is a very exciting camera cause I"m looking to select something to shoot my feature on. The Scarlett looked promising but until it's ready for realease I can't be a fan boy on that...

I had a dream last night.

I had a dream last night.

Dear Jan,
Please give us more control then our wildest dreams. I am looking for the next generation camera, ask the engineers to "open" the camera up. Alow us as artists to create with your cameras so that we may break all the rules. If as an artist right now I have ten thousand different options of creative control, for the next level give me 10 million.

Move beyond just giving us control over gamma curves and Kelvin in the camera, Resurch major Post house color correction software and hardware options. Call in Stu at Red Giant if he'd even talk to a Panasonic rep and work with him on building Looks "in camera". If you make a camera that Stu would be happy with, you will win back any customers you may have lost this year.

Give us a secondary color correction, ranged saturation, and ability to control the color and selection of our highlights, mid tones, and shadows. Talk to Nvida about putting a quarto graphics card in there, if that would help make this happen. Also haveing the option of building the look on a computer and then plugging the "Look" into camera would be helpful.

(I do not intend to take any work away from color correction I want them to move to the next level also.)

At the same time give us RAW, as a DP working on a system that you can "burn in" a look and at the same time also give the client RAW. Alows me to be more creative and the client a safety net, and if there is a color correction person in post the intent and direction I intended. When talking Codec compression etc Please consult with Barry Green and make him happy. Pretty sure if he's happy with it dvxusers would be happy to buy it.

Doing both of these will make everyone happy and elevate production and post production to the next creative level. Start another revolution.

Give us detailed control over our depth of field at any angle of view. A variable ND would be a good start at this, Croping the sensor as others have recommended could also be helpful. (personaly I would love the censor that's size is just a little to heavy to carry myself, something the size of a small Hybrid car, but I realize that's a little selfish)

High speed at any cost, give us higher speed (even at lower resolotions) creatively Drama happens at a 10th of a second but as a story teller I'd like the option to tell it at any speed.

Think of this less of a camera and more of an creative Image creator. I realize that as a creative person my Ideas aren't realistic or even practical, but sometimes to see the future you have to dream the impossible.

This is really got me sitting on the fence. I am just wrapping a long shoot, almost 18 months with my HMC 150 and its time for a new camera. So it was going to be the HPX 300...then the 370 came out and then news of this....
I too have given up waiting for the Scarlet, actually I gave up and bought the HMC150. But reading timelines and knowing how long it took me to get my HMC150.....probably the 370 and then drool when you guys get yours.
I must say I like my Lumix GH1 but it is not suited to many of the gigs I get so it is my B camera.

Everything has been already said on this thread and I know the wishlist is closed but,
I was thinking on what made me buy my first HVX200 in 2006, it was the codec and P2...
I wouldn't go for a HDV camera, no matter how good it was. I still feel that way.
