Aesthetic Decision: 4:3 or 16:9?

A quandry:

I've decided to shoot my first narrative story, a short, with the DVX 100B for reasons of economy and simplicity of workflow.

I plan to output the completed film to DVD for viewing on something like a 36" LCD flatscreen TV - large enough for viewing by 6 or 8 people.

The nature of the story requires shots that include limited depth of field, close-ups and rack focus.

None of the format options give me everything I want, but I need to choose:
4:3 will give me 480 line resolution, which means a lot to me, but projects an old fashioned, out of date, not with it vibe that bothers me.

Letter box or squeeze will give me a contemporary feel, which I like, but at the cost of 120 lines of resolution, which I fear will look terrible at 36"

Anamorphic solves all of the problems above, but at the cost of compromising or making very difficult the visual goals of DOF, close-up and rack focus.

What do you think?

Shoot squeeze/24pA/THIN and don't even worry about the lines of res. Squeeze is the only way you're going to satisfy your aesthetic requirements.
