AES/EBU cable?

Hi,

I will be purchasing very soon the Blackmagic Design: ATEM Television Studio switcher (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/uk/products/atemtelevisionstudio/). But I have one problem which is the Audio input on the switcher. It says AES/EBU Audio Input, and looks like it is a BNC connection. I want to connect this audio input with an audio mixer which will be connected by a XLR male or a 1/4" Phone connector. I'm not familiar with this audio input. So if there is anyone out there that could please help me find the right cable to connect this switcher.

Thank you

it is a digital input that supports multichannel.

you need to output from something that has the ability to output multichannel digital.

What are you trying to use this for?

Thesoundguy is correct. The audio input on the BlackMagic ATEM Television Studio is AES/EBU which is a serial digital signal. You will need some kind of external converter if you want to take an analog audio signal and produce an AES/EBU digital signal.

HOWEVER, what is your larger workflow here? WHY do you need to feed audio into the switcher?

I have assembled and use a very similar system, and in more traditional television production setups, we don't typically feed any audio through the video switcher. It is typically handled entirely separately and only gets joined with video at the recorder (for example in my AJA KiPro).

Basically I'm trying to broadcast a interview on the net using Slingbox Pro-HD. That is why the audio has to go through the switcher. So I can output video and audio to the Slingbox Pro-HD and use for internet streaming. Richard can you please give me a link for the converter? So it looks like connecting using one cable from an analog output to AES/EBU input is not possible.

You need an analog to digital converter to do that. For example:
http://www.markertek.com/Video-Equipment/Video-Processors/Analog-to-Digital-Conversion/Radio-Design-Labs/HR-ADC1.xhtml?HR-ADC1

HOWEVER: This seems like a completely wrong and unworkable solution if you are trying to feed a Slingbox Pro-HD.

The Slingbox appears to have only analog inputs, so it will take your mixer audio output directly (with the appropriate cable).
So, again, I ask why you think you need to feed the audio INTO the video switcher??

The SHOWSTOPPER is that the Blackmagic ATEM has no analog video outputs, so there is no apparent way to connect video to your Slingbox.
Instead of an analog to digital converter for your audio (which you don't seem to need, or at least haven't explained),
you really need a VIDEO digital to analog converter so that you can feed the video into the Slingbox.

Now the Blackmagic 1 M/E Production switcher box DOES have analog output which you could connect to the Slingbox.
But a video SDI to composite converter would be MUCH less expensive.

Yes I believe you are right, I should take audio from my audio mixer and connect it straight to the Slingbox Pro-HD. Also regarding the video issue I think I would go for the less expensive option which is to use a video SDI to composite converter. Thank you again Richard for your help.

Note that the Blackmagic product appears to have internet broadcast capability baked-in, so it isn't clear why you would need the Slingbox at all?

The ATEM Television Studio introduces a pretty significant delay (2 - 3 frames) between video inputs and outputs. If you feed audio directly into the Slingbox and the video goes through the ATEM, the sound will be noticeably out of sync (leading the picture). If you use the digital audio input on the ATEM, the audio gets delayed to match the video and there should be no sync problem. But this re-introduces the problem of converting analog to AES/EBU digital audio ahead of the switcher.

You might just want to go for the ATEM 1M/E, otherwise, you'll be spending a bunch to make the ATEM Television do what you want. But if you do want to go the Television Studio route, here's what you'll need:

Behringer ULTRACURVE PRO DEQ2496
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/DEQ2496.aspx

This will allow you to bring in Line level analog audio from your mixer and output to AES/EBU with delay.
You'll need a 110-75 ohm Transformer which converts from XLR to BNC (the ATEM has a BNC AES/EBU input)
http://www.canare.com/ProductItemDisplay.aspx?productItemID=15

Or if you're trying to save a few bucks and can handle a slight lip sync delay, just get the less expensive Behringer Ultramatch Pro SRC2496

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/SRC2496.aspx

and this RCA to BNC cable from Monoprice http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...d=10203&cs_id=1020308&p_id=624&seq=1&format=1

To convert the HDMI to Component with audio, you might have to do some digging for an inexpensive solution, there are a few out there. A Blackmagic or AJA SDI to component Mini converter would be the way to go, and a lot more solid for professional applications. The nice thing about the ATEM 1/ME is that you have the analog component video out and the analog audio out (breakout cable is included).

I have both the ATEM Television Studio and 1M/E in demo if you would like to try one out.

Thank you Guy for this useful information. I got in touch with Blackmagic and they suggested me to purchase this item to the solve the audio issue

ProSignal PSG03496

http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg03496/audio-converter-r-l-to-optical/dp/AV19974

Now I have purchased the ProSignal, I just need help with what cable I need to connect the converter to the Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio switcher.

For the video connection issue, I have purchased a Blackmagic Mini Converter SDI to Analog.

If this is for internet broadcast, it seems quite likely that a 2-3 frame offset won't even be perceptible. I very rarely see online video with sync that good. And most casual viewers likely wouldn't even notice 2-3 frames of offset.

OTOH, if you want the switcher to encode the complete video+audio signal, you don't really have any choice but to feed AES digital video into it.

It has been reported on another forum that the Behringer SRC2496 Ultramatch Pro Format Converter (US$165) works quite nicely with the BlackMagic ATEM TVS. The Behringer has an RCA output for the coaxial digital signal, and you can feed that directly into the ATEM TVS BNC connector with the appropriate cable.

I am considering a similar system, and that is likely the solution I will use.
