Aerial Shots

Hey guys,

For my new web series that i've been working on for the past three months, i've realized that now is the time to start getting the B-Roll together.

Now im almost done with getting my pilots license, however, i'll be needing to work the camera during the time in the air.

Now my question is, should i go about using a helicopter? Or a small fixed wing aircraft (of which i have access to both). And if i was to go the small aircraft way, do suction mounts work on speeds that high?

cheers

Helicopters are much better for work. It's not wise to mount a camera to either unless you have a camera mount made for a copter or airplane. Handheld out of a copter is good, but you need to be harnessed in. It's also good to have a pilot who has done a lot flying with shooters-especially if you are going to be doing slow speed or hovering.

Whoa, you just got your ticket. What, 20 hours and you want to operate a camera and fly at the same time? Maybe if you had a proper mount, preset your camera and just turned it on and off. But operate a camera and fly with a newly minted 20 hour ticket?
Man, I have over 1000 hours with all the endorsements and still would have a time doing a proper job of both.
Better find a real pilot and do the DP work yourself!!!

Haha. Im still a few months away from being fully certified ( i have to be 16 to solo) so i was going to stick with filming it.

And Macville, thanks for the idea! I've started calling some of those helicopter tours places for prices. But I don't think they're gonna let me hang out of the side of the copter :D

Thanks again guys,

You need to find a private pilot who has lots and lots of hours of not just flying experience, but working with film makers. A pilot who has never worked with a videographer wont cut it. You need a pilot that will understand your visions and be able to put you in the proper positions to get what you need captured. Living in San Diego, I'm sure you wont have a hard time finding a good pilot with filming experience.

Mounts are awesome but one of the best results I have had consisted of a lipstick camewra and some gaff tape to the wing. It's hard to find a pilot that will allow this but there was no vobration whatsover with it.

I had that idea when i first started thinking about how i was going to go about doing this. Unfortunately i dont have access to a lipstick cam (i wish i had something like that :D) nor will the pilot who im asking to help (he's done many shoots) will allow me to do that.

Oh well. Thanks for the help guys!
