I just recently installed 4GB of ram on my Win XP Pro machine, and I noticed After Effects 7 only registers 2GB of it (you can tell by the starting splash-screen when the app is first loading). I did some research and found that there are a few limitations. AE7 can only use 3GB of ram on a Win XP Pro unit, and Win XP Pro, by default only allows a single program to use 2GB of ram. I will explain how to fix this.
So, here is the fix...
Start Menu>Run...
Type in "C:\boot.ini"
When executed this will bring up a notepad doc.
On the line that looks somewhat like this (it happens to be my last line)...
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect"
Type in "/3GB" at the end of the line. The line should now look like this...
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB"
You have just enabled the 3GB flag in Win XP Pro. Now when you reboot AE7, you'll see that you are using 3GB of ram. I only wish you could use all 4GB!
Hope this helps some of you...
