AE & Motion

just so I am clear, is Motion apples version of AE combined with a Livetype type program. Reason I ask, is that I have AE but I have not installed it on my system yet. If Motion can do similiar effects that AE can do then I might want to keep my system all APPLE. I am told Motion is way easier to use as well after you have all the requirements needed to run the software!

Re: AE & Motion

I am learning Motion right now and I find it much easier then AE. It works a bit differently though, check out the review at www.dv.com - they talk about the differences in better clarity then I could.

But I enjoy Motion a lot, and to answer your next question - I believe Motion can't do EVERYTHING AE can, I think AE might have some more professional tools. But this is just the first release of Motion, so maybe 2.0 will have what AE offers and more.

I would think Motion would cover all your needs though - best way to find out is to try it out!

Good luck.

Re: AE & Motion

Yeah, so many people have commented/wondered/lamented on the fact that Motion could be the After Effects killer. Not so. There are some powerful tools that Motion does not have (motion tracking, 3d space, etc), but some things that Motion just inherently does easier. Since you have AE already, I'd have it on my system -- a very, very powerful tool in your arsenal. And I don't see why not to have (especially if they're both at your disposal) both programs happily living side by side on the same machine.

Just keep the two icons away from each other in the dock. It could start something ugly. :)

Re: AE & Motion

I don't forsee Apple pumping up Motion to compete in the high end compositing/motion graphics realm.. that's what they have Shake for.

Also, at a price point that low (motion), I doubt they'd want to take away their own market share from potential Shake users.

Re: AE & Motion

Shake is $3000ish. AE is $700ish. Motion is $300ish. AE is not even close to Shake. Motion is kind of close to AE. Building Motion up with more professional features is not going to make it a Shake-killer. Apple could easily make it a straight-up AE competitor without doing their Shake sales harm.

The real question is whether they want to harm AE sales. Some people have seriously posed the question whether Apple wants to do any more damage to Adobe than they already have, for one reason and another. I guess we'll find out when they update Motion, possibly at MWSF?

And don't forget, I believe there's a pretty hefty annual usage fee as well. Yeah, Shake is big time stuff...

I too am interested to see where Apple takes Motion. I'm all for Apple making some of the coolest apps known to man, but I (much like others) fear for the shakey relationship that is Apple and Adobe...
