AE can't handle my 2D animations project

It crashes every time I try to preview more than 4 seconds at full resolution
Composition is 509 x 400 ( one of the images is 10700 x 7000 though - I zoom / pan through it )

System is core i7 but only 32bit with CS4.
Going crazy here, having to work at 25% resolution set at "Quarter" quality.

Is a 64 bit i7 with CS5 the only way to go? I haven't even started doing animations at HD resolution!

I'd precompose the image at 10700 x 7000 if you can then it doesn't have to handle the calculation for its full size with each frame you render.

I did precompose the image, in fact I split it into 6 smaller subsections which i put together in a separate composition called "SplitW" . I then added "SplitW" to the main composition.
A few days ago it let me preview almost 25 seconds no problem, ( it took ages to render preview though ), not sure what's happening today

I have used AE to handle very large images and I think it specs at something like 30,000 x 30,000. The size of the image you can import or export is influenced by the amount of physical RAM available to AE.

Assuming you have lots of RAM, you might want to try Edit > Purge > Image Cache.

Thanks guys, I tried all of the above and absolutely nothing works. The culprit seem to be 4 or 5 files that are oversized. Tried replacing some of them with smaller versions but didn't really help much. One of them is a world map 11200 x 7800 , as I said I did nested it into its own comp which consisted of 6 smaller sections that made up the map. In the end it made no difference, AE now refuses to render even one frame of this 12 second animation. The animation is done though, doesn't need any more work. Somehow AE was letting me work on it earlier in the project.
All I can do now is carefully save all the assets / project files, dump this @#@#^% version of AE and get a new 64 bit version. Also get a 64 bit OS. And add 24 GB of RAM at least. I've got 6 GB installed and AE CS4 is telling me I can only use 1.2

If you are using 32bit version of Windows then you are not making use of all 6 of those GB of RAM anyway. 32bit Windows can only use 4GB of RAM total. After Windows takes it's own portion for use you end up with around 3.2GB for use by programs. I don't know the specifics on AE's use of RAM, but on my 12GB machine AE will only let me use 9GB for Adobe Software, it reserves 3 for other applications. So I can understand how your machine might not have enough available RAM for large previews.

Yep , I am using WinXP 32bit. Dan, can I ask you if your 12GB RAM is all you were hoping for? WOuld having 24Gb instead make any difference in your workflow? I am looking to get 24GB RAM but mostly because I want to get into 3D in After Effects and also outside of AE ( Cinema 4D, Vue, Poser, etc. ) I can't believe my core i7 system is struggling with a 509 x 400 project, I don't ever want to deal with that kind of crap again!

My workstation is a 3 year old i7 920 oc'd to 3.7 ghtz with the aforementioned 12gb of RAM. I don't have any real complaints about it. I work with HD footage all the time and it doesn't really bog down. I will say though that I just got a new laptop which is a new 3rd gen i7 with 16gb of RAM and it does seem run a bit smoother, but not too much difference. The biggest difference I see is that it's all SSD drives inside and loading footage is much faster. So I added an SSD into my workstation and I find that is helping a good bit. There is a noticeable difference when i'm working with a file or sequence that is on a platter drive compared to the SSD.
