AE and Preferences Question

Hi,
Im new to AE. I just bought it 2 days ago and I finally sat down to play with it. First thing I did was go to set my preferences and it brings me to one question. Just like in Photoshop and Final Cut you can set the program to a scratch disk so you don't have to use your boot drive. Is there a way to do this in AE CS4? My boot drive on my Mac Pro is 500gig and I have the Adobe Production Premium installed, Final Cut Pro. So i'm down to like 348 gigs. However, I have 3 other drives that are 1TB each. One dedicated to Photoshop, one to final cut and the other for AE CS4.
Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Tom

Not sure what you mean. There isn't really any sense to a scratch drive. Your media rests wherever you want it to... or are you talking about renders? AE handles renders in RAM... so again, no need.

Maybe I'm confused at your question.

Do you know how for example with Final cut...it is installed on your boot drive. But you create your projects, save your assets on a scratch drive other than the boot drive. So your boot drive doesn't get cluttered and slow down.
With AE I can create a project with assets and effects and this will get stored where? Where the application is loaded? I hope not bc than my drive will fill up and slow down to nothing, no? This is the way I understand the concept of the scratch disk. An area where my work is copleted and anything thats has to do with that project gets saved on another disk other than the boot disk. So I don't affect the performance of the boot disk. If i'm wrong please explain it to me...the concept of the scratch disk. Maybe the way it was explained to me was incorrect.

Well, AE is indeed stored on your system drive along with effects. Your ASSETS can be placed anywhere. It isn't like you are capturing and having AE PLACE any files anywhere.

So yes, I have all of my assets somewhere other than system drive.

The other thing FCP does is create RENDER FILES for all rendered effects and mixed down audio etc. Those are actual PHYSICAL files and yes, need (should) be placed on a different scratch drive.

Not so in AE. All the rendering is done with RAM and maybe now GPU. No physical files are created so nothing needs to be 'stored' on a scratch disc.

I hope that helps.

(Disclaimer: Although I use AE all the time, I reserve the right to be completely wrong about this - though I don't think I am.)

AE will use a disk cache for previews when RAM is full if enabled in the prefs, as well as overflow volumes. I would suggest reading the manual and live docs. It's all explained in there.
