AE 7.0... I'm underwhelmed!

After looking over the features, there's not a whole lot of incentive to upgrade. Some cool presets (they appear to be fractal noise presets), and character by character blur... but that's about it.

And thank goodness I never bought the whole bundle. Crazy upgrade pricing...

Well, IF they implemented the change to the keyframe editor to be more like a graph editor in most 3D apps (like they were supposed to) that alone would be worth an upgrade, especially to those who use AE for animating effects.

The whole revamping of the interface to be more like premiere is a downer though. Premiere pretty much stinks, and if I wanted to be working in that nightmare of an app, I would be.

I wonder if the fractal noise presets can be used by 6.5?

In all, most of the truly great stuff about AE hasn't changed all that much since 5. Sure there are some new automations, but the real guts is still there.

THe new graph editor is nice, as well as the ability to work in float color with HDR, but still not enough to make me jump up and go buy it.

I would have liked to see a little more in terms of feature upgrades, but Rapier is right, there hasn't been "huge" changes since 5 anyway.

Still a great program.

I'll be upgrading for the 32bit float point color, graph editor, script editor, etc.

It's all in what you do with it. That's why I think its funny they include presets (text animations, etc). I know they have to include their hobby/beginner userbase, but its still funny.

HDRi?

float support? Does it make your desk float? Sweet, I always wanted to float!! Im gettting it for that alone. hehe

I love the docking setup man, that was a much needed UI change.

Good deal, I've been using eLin for a while now, so that it is a nice addition. I actually saw a pic after I posted that of side by side pics of eLin and AE7's Compounder, and it seemed to me that eLin looked a little better.

I've used plenty of times...mostly for controlling exposure and stopping down video...pretty nifty. Don't have any example I can post though, but there is a good write up on it in the book After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques by the guy who made it, Brendan Bolles.

I've used it, but don't have any example clips because I haven't used it in about a year. I mainly used it for giving a more natural motion blur when i'd animate hard objects.

Why the bet?

errr, it has a new timewarp function... a retimer thats a licensed version of teh proven Kronos plug-in from the Foundry. Very useful id say if you're into slo mo and funky speed ramps etc...

I just started using AE 7 today. The UI alone is worth the upgrade. I love how all of the windows/palettes stretch and shrink together. It was very easy to jump into after working from previous versions. And yes, this isn't the biggest upgrade in the world. But I think it is a MUCH bigger leap than we saw from AE 5 to AE 6 and so on. If AE is something you use quite often, then I would definetly recommend the upgrade. Lynda.com also has a great video on all of the new features of AE 7. I recommend checking it out, to get the most of the software. After watching the DVD you'll realize that AE 7 is a pretty nice upgrade.

Oh, and if you buy the production studio, you get extra features that make going from each Adobe application very seamless. It looks beautiful in action. Honestly I told myself that this was the last year I used Premiere (man that program bugs me sometimes). But after seeing how the new integration works, I can't let go. Honestly it is pretty cool stuff. I guess learning Avid will have to wait for me.
