Advise Me on Best Monitor among the Monitor-Recorders

Hello Listers,

My aging eyes are giving me fits, again. I am considering a monitor upgrade and need information about the new generation of monitor-recorders. I am presently dumb-stupid about this class of product so would appreciate some guidance.

I still have a 1080 workflow but of course, I'd prefer to future plan for 4k. I want both sdi and hdmi input. But most of all, I want the brightest sharpest 5"-7" monitor to focus with. I assume any of the newer gear would include 10 bit encoding as a minimum. I have always been partial to Sound Devices products so am curious about their Pix series. And, I really don't have to have a recorder so if there is an economy option on just a monitor, then I'd consider that also. As for a budget, I don't have a set amount in mind, but it seems there are a lot of options for less than $1500.

TIA

I'd say the SmallHD 702 Bright, but their new OLED 703 Ultra Bright looks to be slowly replacing it on sets I've seen.

Despite just selling mine, I think the Osee HCM700 is an excellent monitor for the price. It's not a recorder, but at about half the cost of the SmallHD 702 Bright, it provides excellent value. At 1100 nits you could probably find something brighter but at that point glare is more of an issue than more brightness.

I wish I didn't have to sell mine but honestly I don't need a 7" monitor moving forward.

Atomos Shogun inferno is the only one that fits your requirements. 10bit HDR screen that is capable of being calibrated, high brightness (1500 nits) so viewable outside, lots of format conversion and recording codec options . SDI + HDMI input. Large 7” screen for easy focusing and all the scopes and other visual tools you could possibly want.
