Advice with the Sony ECM670 and its 1-542-XXX siblins

I already own several mics (shotguns, lav, hypers, etc) for specific usages and I'm pretty happy with them, bur I'm looking for a "swiss army knife" mic to be included in a the kind of camera set up to carry along when your're hanging around in the search of something thing to shoot).

Requirement:
Must be as short and unobtrusive as possible.
Would be mainly used for voice, shockmounted on the camera.
May be used handheld occasionally.
Should be fairly directional although not extreme.
Should have a decent range for some environmental use besides speech.
Should not be too sensitive (I'll carry along a LW miniscreen anyway)
Price range between $120 and $200 second hand.

I know, it's gonna be a compromise solution, so don't fire at me for that.
I was considering the Sony ECM670 or one of its 1-542-XXX siblins.
How do you guru guys feel about it? Do you have any other suggestions?

Tks
