wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to improve this photo. color correction tips would be nice.

any ideas?

curves, sharpening, levels, selective color... what are you trying to say with it?

When you take a picture you should know how you want it to end up looking so you aren't sitting there in post going, "where should I go with it now?"

Pure and simple, what are you looking for? To start with, S-Curve, Levels, and balance the colors.

here's my take:

I like the potential in the eyes. With a higher rez version you'd lose the blotchyness in some areas.

if you want a detailed description of what i did just ask.

first copied the original colour version (for later use) then converted to black and white.

Changed the levels and brightness/contrast until i got a good defined image i liked (this is a personal thing) i then change it back to RGB mode and paste in the original colour.

I put the black and white layer above the colour and set it as an Overlay in the layers panel.

After that i got back to the colour version and change the Hue/Saturation to get the colours to pop and to make sure i can see any important details.

The last thing i did was repaste another version of the original photo and selectively cut out the eyes. I deleted everything else and set that as an overlay ontop of the other layers and then changed the Hue/Saturation until i got it to look interesting.

Finally i flattened the image and duplicated it in a new layer.

That new layer i put a strong gaussian blur on it and then reduced the opacity of the layer until it just gives it a subtle softening to the overall image. I would also recommend putting a layer mask on the blurred layer and removing the effect around any areas you want sharp ( i didn't do that in my version )

hope that helps. If its not clear i can get more into details.

I think the lack of definition in the eyes take away from this photo...you can faintly see that the expression is there to really sell the shot, but when you look at it, the first thing to jump out at you is the cigarette dangling from the mouth, couple that with the bruises and it has me thinking that it's a fight club cigarette ad.

There's lots of potential, just bring them eyes out!
