Advice on sports footage production

Hi everyone. I am a newbie to this forum & also to A/V production, so please excuse the simplicity of my qns whilst I find my feet!

I am seeking advice about how to produce content for a community TV program about my local Table Tennis competition (www.TTVSuperLeague.com). Basically, I'm planning to capture all matches, played on 3 tables each week & format into usable content with as much of the production process automated as possible.

At the moment, I'm looking at JVC HD7 cam-corders, using HDMI feed to PCs which would be running Windows Media Encoder to capture locally. WME has an API which I'm thinking about writing a software program that would allow someone to remotely control the stream capture start / stop from a wireless device whilst games are in progress so the cameras don't need to be manned (they'll be mounted high / possibly in the stadium scaffold). From there, the PC software will be used to archive captured streams, compress & post to YouTube & then used for post production of the TV show.

My main concerns are :

a) Is a consumer product such as the JVC HD7 suitable for this type of activity or do I really need a more broadcast level camcorder?

b) Are there alternatives to Windows Media Encoder which provide an API that allows software development to further automate tasks such as I'm planning?

c) Is there anything fundamentally wrong with using WME for this type of purpose?

d) Any other advice for a newbie like me on a project like this?

Cheers,
Greg Linwood
