Advice on PP2 update

I just received my PP2 update disk.

Will all of my PP1.5 avi clips be accesable when I update?

I have a current project in process....should I wait til finished before updating?

Do you notice any improvement in video quality export...avi, DVD etc?

Your .avi clips will not be affected.

You can open your 1.5 PPRO project in 2.0 without any problems. However once you make changes and save it in 2.0 you cannot go back and re-open it in 1.5.

If it will makes you feel better, simply make a copy of your existing 1.5 project so you have a back up. However once you get rolling in 2.0 you won't turn back! ;-)

I use either Encore or Sorenson to encode, so I can't comment on the changes in export quality.

Glad to hear 2.0 will make life better. haha.

Ive found in making a DVD there IS a difference to quality/look depending on what method you use. In PP 1.5 direct to DVD using a high quality 4:3 2pass was the best of the presets. But WOW..it took forever to encode! (Im using a single core processor). I tried one pass method, and it seem to be lower rez.

I will export an AVI before loading update 2.0 and then use the export to DVD settings to see if its any better. You use Encore or Sorenson.............I assume youve found them better than exporting via PP2.
Is that the Sorenson Squeeze and Adobe Encore?............If you had one of these to choose which would you keep.

Thanks so much........Ive got a lot to learn.

OH GREAT !!

In loading PP2.0 update....found out that my AMD processor is the wrong one.
Adobe alert says I need "SSE2 enabled processor"....what ever the hell that is!

Will look in the bios and see if SSE2? can be enabled.
Oh well, here we go again...............technology...aint it fun!!!

Update....well Im screwed. Current processor wont work with PP2.

Question:
What "off the shelf" computer will work well. Gateway or Dell..model #?

I built my current computer...but dont really want to go through that again.

I need a computer that will handle video editing using PP2 and later the new Adobe CS3 interactive software.

Please advice needed.
Jeff

I actually ran into this same problem when I wanted to install PP2 on my girlfriends HP. PP2 didnt like her processor. Im currently using a custom Dell XPS wth the entire Adobe studio and it works great. I hope to upgrade to CS3 aswell.

I really "need" to update my computer anyway, but didnt want to do it this year. Looks like Im gonna have to now.

Sorry to bother you so much, but Im kinda desparate today. ha

Would you please give me the model number of your Dell XPS. Even better tell me the options (custom) components you added.

Below Ive included a quote from a AMD supplier and pricing. Would you look this over and let me know if you think its a good system at a good price.
Thanks,Jeff

I would give the Core 2 Duo processors a look. If you have the budget the quad-core is the way to go. Plus Adobe CS3 is being designed to take full advantage of the intel multi-cores procs.

Check out the PPRO 2.0 MPEG conversion times in the link below.. A HUGE difference between the Q6600 and the AMD X2 6000+ (To give you a reference point; your AMD 4200+ encoding time will be somewhere in the 8 to 9 minute range vs. the 3 min for the Q6600.. yeah it's big price difference too..)

btw - new systems don't come with floppies drives anymore. Do you really need one? Savings: $26

Also where did you get your quote from? I just did a quick check at Newegg for pricing and the AM2 Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ proc you have listed for $126 is going for only $84 at newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103741

And depending on the exact model of mobo (ASUS M2N AM2 SOCKET ATX ) I see them as cheap as $50 at new egg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131183

Also I would stear clear of a mobo that has onboard video since you are already buying a video card... just one less problem to deal with.

Because you are out-of-state you will not have to pay sales tax at Newegg. You will however have to put the system together yourself..

Other savings I found at newegg:

WD1600JS (your price listed: $67) newegg $52 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144415

EVGA 256-P2-N541-TX (your price listed: $102 ) newegg: $72.99 ($62 after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130075

Woo hoo this is fun, now you can use the extra money to buy a Intel Dual core proc and mobo... ;-)

haha...aint this FuN.............my brain hurts :>)

Thanks for all the great advice and looking into my system quote.
I will check out the lead, and try to make a decision............I hate decisions. haha

I'm pretty sure Adobe has a section that will tell you what the minimum hardware requirements are . . . if not you might consider calling them as version 3 is just around the corner and you won't want to go through this twice this summer?

I think you are going to find that some variation of a genuine Intel processor is going to be the best answer. I'd like to hear what you discover?

I "am" reluctant to go with the AMD..just for that reason. However, some computer techs I talk to, swear by the AMD. Exp the AMD64 proc.

I have ask the supplier of the system Im ordering to price it both ways AMD and Intel.............will let ya know.
Jeff

BTW...I took your advice and ordered the INTEL processor instead of the AMD. Now on to CS3 ! :)

Jeff

Due to budget I went with the dual. Working with a singel core processor for a long time, even the dual is a "step up" for me. Will get CS3 in a year or so.

Once I get into HD in a year or so....I will get a new HOT NLE setup. Right now I just want to learn how to use my DVX, really experiment with the capabilities of PP2, after effects, and do some real cinema projects. The Intel dual should help speed learning up a bit.

Have a great week,
Jeff

You are going to be in heaven with the dual core for SD footage! Running both PPRO and AE at the same time will be a breeze (at least 2 GB of memory is recommended for this)

What kind of drive(s) are you using?

That's great news. Rendering times for color correction and FX have always been a pain to me................such slow rendering times. Hopefully the duo2 will speed up the process.

Drives: Im using a 300gig Seagate 7200rpm for video capture. I had two but one crapped out......Also have a MyBook (western digital I think).

Id really like to get a used copy of AE to experiment. About all the videos Ive made are just cut and transition wedding type stuff. Im looking forward to do some music videos and maybe some shorts and commercials.

Have a happy 4th
Jeff
