Advice on New Computer

Hi - It's time for me to upgrade to a mac desktop computer. I've been running Photoshop CS and FCP 6.0 on my laptop and it's really slow and crashes often. Does anyone have any advice on what specs I need in order to run these programs and their upgrades for the next 5 years or so? I can't really afford the top of the line - nor do I really have the need for it at this point. I would like to keep costs under $3000. I'd like to buy a 2009 machine so that I don't have to replace it soon but am open to a refurbished or slightly used machine as long as it has a good warranty on it. So if anyone who knows their machines can impart some advice - how much RAM, type of processors, video card etc. I need, would be grateful.

Nothing HD yet - but perhaps in the future. The pieces I cut are often for organizations or artists and range anywhere from 5 min - 1 hour. Usually am working with between 20 -30 hours of footage.
