I'm a photographer with a 5D Mark II and I've decided I'd like to create some indoor videos for stock. That means I'm new to video, and as I usually shoot outdoor photography, I'm fairly ignorant of indoor lighting in general. (Though I've been doing a lot of reading over the last week+.)
The green screen I'm probably going to purchase is this one from Steve Kaeser Backgrounds in 10x20 size. I like it because it's the least expensive opaque one I could find. I'd rather have an eefx version, but at 1/2 price I'm hoping I can get by with this one.
I'm looking to purchase lighting that would be appropriate for both white and green screen video and photographic work. The available space is approximately 12x20x12; not ideal, but it is what it is.
Now for the tough parts: I'd like to use cool lights exclusively if possible, as heat can be a real problem here in the "summer" (May - Oct). I’d like to shoot some full-length shots, as well as 2/3 and portrait. From what I’ve read, the lighting for full-length green screen can be very tricky and tough. Lastly, my budget is around $1000.
Ok, so, I’ve read all about 3-point lighting, and I’m anxious to have a go. I was looking at something like this, for example. Seems like it would throw off plenty of light (the 2 big ones are probably more than I'd need, but they're selectable). The pricing seems a bit ridiculous, though, as the replacement bulbs alone cost almost as much as the entire kit. And that's one of the things that worries me about this kit, as I've yet to find another source for similar replacement bulbs (E39 - Mogul - base, 120W, 5300K, CRI 90). And some people have had problems with Britek lights, though as best as I can tell, their flo fixtures aren't generally bad. And they have a lot of affordable choices.
Another worry is using a soft light as a backlight. CoolLight's CDM 75 or 150 Fresnel would probably be a much better choice, but it would also break my budget (as relatively inexpensive as it is). So I might have to go with one hot light, as there seem to be several reasonable choices I could use (e.g., a Lowel Pro-light). But then I'll not only have a little heat to put up with, but also a need to balance the color temp -- no such thing as a free lunch.
Then there's the lighting of the backdrop itself. I'm thinking of 2 flo tube light banks of 4 tubes each. That'd be the rough equivalent of 1000w on each side, which should be enough. But I haven't been able to find a source of fixtures that would be affordable, so I may have to DIY something (not sure how competent I am in that regard, but I've yet to come up with an alternate plan). That would cover the vertical portion of the backdrop, but for the full-length shots, I'd need something to light up the bottom of it, too.
A lot of rambling, for which I apologize. But I'll admit to being pretty confused and uncertain as to what I need and what to get. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Ken
